India and South Africa are set for a blockbuster showdown in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22. Both sides enter the clash unbeaten from their respective groups, making this arguably the biggest test yet for the defending champions and one that could shape the semifinal race.

In December last year, India and South Africa locked horns, and India won the series.

This match is also a rematch of the dramatic 2024 T20 World Cup final, which India narrowly won by seven runs, adding another layer of rivalry and pressure. So the stakes are going to be high for this match.

India vs South Africa: Team News

India dominated the group stage, winning all four of their matches, with a different player of the match emerging in every match for the Men in Blue. Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Suryakumar Yadav, and Varun Chakaravarthy have been fired so far.

However, one major concern for the team revolves around Abhishek Sharma, who has struggled for runs. He wasn’t able to open his account because he had scored three consecutive ducks in the tournament. Whereas, Tilak Varma also looked off with the bat, as his strike is a concern, and Sanju Samson could replace him.

There is also speculation that Axar Patel or Washington Sundar could return to strengthen the all-round balance.

South Africa also arrived unbeaten, and their coach, Shukri Conrad, believes India will carry heavier pressure as defending champions.

Led by Aiden Markram, the Proteas boast explosive batters like Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and rising star Dewald Brevis, alongside a fearsome pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje. It’s going to be a high-octane clash.

Strongest Predicted Lineups

India likely XI:

Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma/Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel/Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh

South Africa likely XI:

Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram (c), Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

Key battles that could decide the match

1. Arshdeep vs Quinton de Kock

The left-handed fast bowler against South Africa’s aggressive opener de Kock could set the tone in the powerplay. Arshdeep has dismissed de Kock 4 times out of 8 in T20Is.

2. Varun Chakaravarthy vs South Africa’s middle order

Varun has already been India’s leading wicket-taker and could trouble hitters like Miller, Brewis, and Stubbs.

3. Hardik Pandya vs Marco Jansen

Two-star all-rounders of their teams who could influence the game with both bat and ball.

What will defeat look like?

If Suryakumar Yadav’s team loses, their unbeaten momentum will be broken, and the qualification pressure will increase, with West Indies and Zimbabwe still to come. They are also unbeaten in the tournament. The next two matches must be won without depending on other teams’ results.

If South Africa loses, their semifinal hopes won’t end, but the pressure on them will rise significantly, and the situation will be the same as for India, since it’s the first Super 8 game for both teams. Psychological scars of losing another big game against India could resurface.
