Manchester United move on from Sancho as Dortmund reunion nears

Manchester United look ready to finally move past the Jadon Sancho era this summer. Reports indicate the 26-year-old has given the “green light” to return to Borussia Dortmund for a third stint. According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, deep discussions have already taken place, leaving Dortmund with the financial details they need to pull the trigger. Manager Niko Kovac has reportedly voiced his internal support for the deal to sporting director Ole Book and CEO Lars Ricken. Most importantly, Sancho seems set on the move despite interest from other clubs and appears willing to take a pay cut to return to Germany.

How did five years at Old Trafford fall apart?

Sancho arrived at United for £73 million in 2021, intended to be a cornerstone of the attack alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. Instead, his time in Manchester became a cautionary tale of mismatched expectations. Following a public fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag, he was frozen out of the squad after the 2024 Community Shield.

Subsequent loan spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa failed to spark a full resurgence. During his current run at Villa Park, he has struggled with just one goal and three assists in 33 games, which is a far cry from the 114 goal contributions he tallied in his first 137 appearances for Dortmund. Manchester United will likely close this chapter with Sancho having provided just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games, a disappointing return for what was once the club’s fourth-most expensive signing.

Why does this move make sense for United?

Manchester United should view this exit as a necessary clearing of the decks rather than just a failure. While the club’s leadership (INEOS) has a one-year extension option, using it helps no one, least of all a player who clearly needs a fresh start in a familiar environment. While Sancho’s Dortmund stats prove he still has talent, he simply never fit the atmosphere at Old Trafford, where years of erratic recruitment hampered his progress.

Losing him on a free transfer is a financial blow, but it removes a significant wage burden and clears the path for Michael Carrick to continue rebuilding the squad. Manchester United need to stop looking back at expensive mistakes and focus on signing players who fit the high-intensity, structured style Carrick is currently implementing, which is a system Sancho never quite suited.
