Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils make shock contact with Alvarez camp
Manchester United transfer news: Manchester United have reportedly made direct contact with Julián Álvarez‘s agent. It is a massive curveball. The summer transfer window was already chaotic, but this latest twist has caught everyone completely off guard. Why? Because the player has been incredibly vocal about his next move. He wants out of Atletico Madrid, sure, but his heart is set on Barcelona. That is his dream. Fulfilling it, however, is proving near impossible.
The roadblocks are piling up for the Argentine. Real Madrid tried their luck first, lodging a massive €150 million (£130m) bid. Atletico did not even blink before turning it down. Barcelona have shown interest in the player’s camp, but their financial reality means their approaches have gone nowhere. Atletico executives are playing hardball. They are pointing every single suitor toward the forward’s €500 million (£431m) release clause. Nobody is paying that. Even with heavy negotiating, any realistic deal will still require a staggering €200 million (£172m).
The price tag is eye-watering. Yet, the data explains why elite clubs are queuing up. Look at his output.
A look at the numbers
Álvarez absolutely tore it up during the 2025-26 campaign. He racked up 20 goals and nine assists in 49 games for Atletico across all competitions. His domestic form was steady, yielding eight goals and four assists in 29 La Liga matches. But Europe is where he truly came alive. He lit up the Champions League with 10 goals and four assists in just 15 outings. Along the way, he smashed Lionel Messi’s record to become the fastest South American to hit 25 goals in Europe’s elite competition, doing it in a mere 41 games.
He is an absolute weapon. At 22, he won the World Cup. At 23, the Champions League. He finished his debut season in Spain as Atletico’s top marksman, bagging 29 goals in total.
So, what are United playing at?
According to Spanish journalist Marcos Duran, the forward’s representatives are scrambling for plan B, C, and D because the Barcelona option is dead in the water. United have positioned themselves as that luxury safety net. There is a bit of spite involved, too. INEOS are still smarting from recent transfer market tussles with Manchester City. Beating them to a former player would feel sweet.
Using a grudge to justify a £172 million outlay is bizarre. It makes very little sense on paper.
Old Trafford has already seen £74 million go out the door to secure Benjamin Sesko. The remaining summer kitty is supposed to be reserved for two, maybe three, dynamic central midfielders. Spending a fortune on another striker is financial suicide. The club are supposed to be restructuring, not throwing cash around like a lottery winner.

If they want a backup forward, cheaper targets exist. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Dušan Vlahović have both been discussed internally. Those deals are actually doable. Álvarez is a generational talent, but Old Trafford just cannot make the math work.
