Manchester United new striker: 3 forwards who could transform Old Trafford this summer

Manchester United new striker: The pressure is building fast. Manchester United‘s hunt for a new striker has quickly become the loudest storyline of this summer transfer window. With good reason. United dropped a massive £74m on Benjamin Sesko back in August 2025. The young Slovenian did well enough, netting 11 goals in 30 appearances during his debut season at Old Trafford, but head coach Michael Carrick wants a proper goalscorer to challenge him. With Champions League football locked in and Joshua Zirkzee almost certain to leave, bringing in another elite centre-forward isn’t a luxury. It’s an emergency.

1. Victor Osimhen:

It is the dream signing. Probably too expensive, yes. But absolutely worth fighting for.

Look at the numbers from his 2025/26 Super Lig season. Osimhen racked up 15 goals and 5 assists in just 22 appearances for Galatasaray. That is a sensational 7.76 FotMob rating. He did not stop there either, tearing up Europe with 7 goals and 3 assists in 10 Champions League games. The striker is 27 now. Peak years. He has proved himself in Serie A, in Europe, and now in Turkey. Landing the Nigeria ace could instantly turn United into genuine title challengers. The catch? They would need to hand Galatasaray a staggering €150m (£130m).

That price tag will scare INEOS. It should. But for a club chasing its first league title in over a decade while returning to Europe’s top table, Osimhen alters what is possible on a pitch. He does not just finish chances. He bullies defenders, drags backlines out of shape, and brings a sheer nastiness inside the penalty box that Sesko still lacks. Complaining about the money is fair enough. Doubting his quality is not.

2. Jean-Philippe Mateta:

Sensible. Proven. By far the most realistic fit of the lot.

During the 2025/26 Premier League season, Mateta managed 12 goals in 2,222 minutes for Crystal Palace. That return deserves serious respect given Palace’s limited service and rigid style of play. He also scored the winning goal in the UEFA Conference League final in May 2026. He delivers when the lights are brightest. At 29, he is right in his prime. Palace will likely value him around the £40m mark. Crucially, United see him as a reliable Premier League asset who can score goals without ruining Sesko’s long-term development.

Mateta offers a profile that United have lacked for years. He is a physically dominant focal point who holds up the ball, wins his aerial duels, and performs under pressure. He will not sell millions of shirts worldwide. Who cares? He is exactly the type of forward who grinds out results on a wet Tuesday night in February. With Champions League matches cluttering the calendar every three weeks, that sort of squad depth is vital.

3. Harry Kane:

Outrageous? Perhaps. Impossible? Do not bet against it.

Kane spent the 2025/26 Bundesliga season putting up absurd numbers. He banged in 36 goals and provided 5 assists in 2,382 minutes, coasting to an 8.14 FotMob rating. Across the entire campaign, he scored over 70 goals for Bayern and England combined. That is the second-highest tally ever recorded in a single season, sitting just behind Lionel Messi’s legendary 82-goal run in 2011/12. He is 32 now, with a contract running until 2027, but whispers from Germany suggest contract talks at Bayern Munich have completely stalled. Europe’s heavyweights are fully alert.

His current market value hovers around £82m. That looks incredibly steep for a player in his thirties, but Kane is not a normal 32-year-old. He is the most complete centre-forward in the world. United have wasted far bigger sums on much worse players over the last decade. Bringing the England captain back home, even for just two or three seasons, sends a message no other signing can match. The Premier League all-time scoring record is still within his reach, and the desire to break it clearly burns bright.

CaughtOffside reports that United are fully expected to replace Zirkzee, drawing up a shortlist featuring Mateta, Osimhen, Eli Junior Kroupi, and Dusan Vlahovic. Out of those names, three stand out for completely different reasons. One represents raw ambition, one offers cold pragmatism, and one provides pure footballing genius. Carrick and INEOS face a brutal choice between spending big on a superstar or backing the sensible option. What they decide will dictate the club’s trajectory for years.
