Dwight McNeil to West Ham: Hammers interested in struggling Everton winger amid Championship rebuild

Dwight McNeil to West Ham: Dwight McNeil to West Ham is a story picking up serious traction this week. Sky Sports reporters Vinny O’Connor and Chris Reidy have confirmed that the Hammers hold a genuine interest in the Everton winger. Nuno Espírito Santo is mapping out his squad for Championship football. The 26-year-old left-footer has been on the radar of multiple clubs for the past 18 months, so this is far from a bolt from the blue. What makes it complicated, though, is that West Ham are no longer a Premier League outfit. Relegation confirmed in May changes everything.

Talks are at the earliest of stages. No formal approach has been made. New director of player recruitment, Nils Koppen, confirmed in the role this weekend, pending work visa clearance, must first sit down with Nuno and the club’s scouting department. Koppen arrives from FC Copenhagen. He carries real significance in this process. West Ham appear sensible enough to let him bed in properly before committing to targets.

McNeil has the tools but needs a clean slate

McNeil’s 2025/26 campaign at Goodison Park was, bluntly, a difficult one. He managed just one assist across 22 Premier League appearances under David Moyes, accumulating 1,171 minutes of playing time and averaging a FotMob rating of 6.62, per Opta. That’s a significant drop-off. The prior season saw him contribute four goals and six assists in 21 league outings.

Then came the failed loan move to Crystal Palace in January. A £20m deal collapsed because Palace couldn’t submit the paperwork in time, as BBC Sport reported. It left McNeil’s confidence visibly shaken. His partner openly criticised the club on social media. He played just two minutes in Everton’s final league fixture against Sunderland.

Despite that turbulent campaign, his pedigree is there. In total, McNeil has clocked 248 Premier League appearances, scoring 21 goals and registering 33 assists, per the official Premier League data. His left foot, crossing ability, and pressing statistics; he won back possession in the final third an average of 0.9 times per 90 in 2024/25, joint-highest in Moyes’ squad, are precisely the profile West Ham want on the left flank. Teammate James Tarkowski has described him as “terrific,” and reporter Joe Thomas previously called him “magic.” With his contract at Everton expiring in June 2027, the Toffees won’t command anything near his original £20m fee.

The Summerville factor and outgoings

Crysencio Summerville’s future sits right at the heart of this. The Dutchman has reportedly told his representatives he wants to join Manchester United. Jarrod Bowen has also been linked with an exit. Summerville registered five Premier League goals after January alone in 2025/26. Losing him would gut West Ham’s attacking depth. McNeil could slot into that left-side vacancy directly. He’s comfortable on either flank but most dangerous hugging the touchline on the left, delivering crosses that create genuine chances. He isn’t a marquee name. Nobody is pretending otherwise.

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest both circled him in January’s window. The market values him. Everton, meanwhile, have signed Tyrique George from Chelsea and are not standing in the way of a departure. Whether McNeil fancies life in the Championship is the outstanding question West Ham’s recruitment team needs to answer.
