Man Utd new signings: The two deals keeping Old Trafford up at night

Man Utd new signings: Aurélien Tchouaméni and Alex Scott sit high on Manchester United‘s midfield shortlist this summer. It is an understatement to say Michael Carrick’s side are desperate. After watching both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali pick Tottenham Hotspur over a move to M16, the recruitment team is under immense pressure to deliver ahead of a return to the Champions League. United need elite bodies in the engine room. They need them now. The fanbase is understandably furious at how easily Spurs have hoovered up rival targets, leaving United to scramble for alternatives while the clock ticks.

The pursuit of Tchouaméni is an absolute mess. He is the dream. Fabrizio Romano has spent weeks repeating that the 26-year-old Frenchman is the exact profile the club would love to sign, but dealing with Real Madrid is proving to be a headache. Reports from Spain suggest United are ready to pitch an £85 million package to secure the defensive midfielder, viewing him as the definitive long-term replacement for Casemiro.

Then comes the roadblock. José Mourinho is now in the Madrid dugout, and he has made it clear that Tchouaméni is central to his plans. Selling him is out of the question unless the player throws a tantrum to force an exit, which looks highly unlikely. Sky Sports even dropped a hint that Madrid would actually prefer to shift Eduardo Camavinga if they had to sacrifice a midfielder. United are essentially chasing a man who has no desire to pack his bags for Manchester. (Via: Goal.com)

Alternative targets and the wing dilemma

If the Tchouaméni deal completely falls apart, the focus shifts heavily to Alex Scott. Do not expect Bournemouth to play nice, though. The South Coast club are already drawing up a lucrative new contract to protect their asset. The 22-year-old was brilliant last season, racking up 2,859 minutes across 37 Premier League appearances while chipping in with three goals and an assist.

His 84 per cent pass accuracy and 26 key passes tell the story of a progressive, forward-thinking midfielder. Missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s final 26-man England squad for the World Cup has only driven his hunger, and his price tag is higher. Bournemouth paid £25 million to Bristol City back in 2023, so any successful bid from Old Trafford will need to clear the £50 million mark.

Away from the midfield drama, Crysencio Summerville is the name dominating the left-wing conversation. Exploratory talks have started with West Ham for the 24-year-old Rotterdam-born winger, who still managed five goals and two assists in a relegated side last term.

The Hammers want £50 million for him, a fee inflated by his recent World Cup cameos for the Netherlands. United want to fund this by offloading Marcus Rashford, but Rashford will not even report back to Carrington until late August, depending on England’s tournament progress. Carrick might just end up keeping him. Spurs are lurking here too, and United know they cannot afford another embarrassing hijack.
