Karim Coulibaly to Manchester United: Old Trafford joins the £43m scramble for Werder Bremen’s defensive prodigy
Karim Coulibaly to Manchester United: Manchester United are tracking Werder Bremen centre-back Karim Coulibaly. According to reports from TEAMtalk, the hierarchy at Old Trafford has taken serious notice of the teenager. It makes sense. While some might think a move for the young Frenchman is premature, his numbers from the recent Bundesliga campaign tell a very different story.
Born in May 2007, the left-footed defender logged 2,122 minutes across 27 senior appearances last season. He even chipped in with a goal. For a kid who spent the first part of the year waiting for a break, that is massive.
He stands at 191cm. He is a unit. Yet, anyone tagging him as a slow, old-school defender is completely wrong. Coulibaly clocked a top speed of 32.86 km/h last term, routinely stepping out of the backline to shut down counter-attacks. He won 38 aerial duels and made 104 clearances. He likes the ugly side of the game. But it is his comfort on the ball that really moves the needle for elite clubs. His passing accuracy regularly hovered above the 88% mark.
Twelve months ago, he was a complete unknown. Then, Bremen hit a massive injury crisis. Thrown into the deep end against Bayer Leverkusen, the kid delivered. He smashed home a 94th-minute equaliser, volleying a rebound off the crossbar to secure a point. He has been a fixture in the side ever since. (GMS)
The massive hurdle facing Manchester United’s pursuit
Michael Carrick needs ball-playing defenders who can hold a high line. With Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez both spending too much time on the treatment table recently, United need cover. Coulibaly fits the bill.
The problem is the queue. Chelsea are already in talks with Bremen. Todd Boehly’s recruitment team wants him, and Xabi Alonso has reportedly told people the kid is perfect for the Premier League. PSG, Napoli, Newcastle, and Marseille are all watching.
Bremen want a bidding war. They will start talking at £35m, but the German club expects the final price to land closer to £43m. They also want him back on loan for next season. That is a massive sticking point for teams wanting an immediate impact.

United also have to look at their own backyard. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are already on the books, and they play in the exact same position. INEOS might struggle to justify dropping £43m on another teenager when the midfield needs urgent surgery. Money is tight.
