Ederson to Manchester United edges closer as Brazil crash out
Ederson to Manchester United: Brazil’s shocking World Cup exit has moved fast. So have Manchester United. With the Seleção dumped out of the tournament in the round of 16 by Norway on 5 July, the path is clear for Atalanta midfielder Ederson to complete his £35 million move to Old Trafford. According to TEAMtalk, the 26-year-old will fly to England this week to undergo a medical and sign a four-year contract. He will be Michael Carrick’s first summer signing.
United had agreed the deal weeks ago. A fee of £35m, plus £3.8m in add-ons, was struck with Atalanta well in advance, with personal terms also confirmed. The club had held off formalising everything while Ederson remained in Brazil’s World Cup squad. It was a courtesy that became irrelevant sooner than anyone in the Carrick camp anticipated.
Erling Haaland ended Brazil’s tournament on Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Manchester City striker scored twice in the final 11 minutes, a towering 79th-minute header and a low drive in the 90th, to give Norway a 2-1 win. Neymar’s stoppage-time penalty, his first goal of the tournament, amounted to nothing more than a consolation. For Brazil, it marked their earliest World Cup exit since 1990. For United, it was a green light. (Via The Standard)
Ederson to Manchester United: What the player brings to Old Trafford
Ederson turns 27 this month and arrives off the back of a consistent if unspectacular Serie A campaign. He made 30 appearances for Atalanta in 2025-26, starting 26, and contributed 2 goals and 1 assist across 2,235 minutes. His pass accuracy sits in the 85th percentile, and his pass volume in the 79th, per recent scout data, underlining a midfielder built to circulate and control.
Three yellow cards this season tells its own story about intensity. Italy great Andrea Pirlo has been bullish about the switch, saying the Brazilian is “a dynamic runner and intense” who “can adapt really well” to the demands of the Premier League. Atalanta, meanwhile, valued him at closer to £43m on the market. The agreed fee looks sharp business for United.
He is expected to be the first of at least two new midfielders this summer. United and Carrick had prioritised Matheus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, only to watch both sign for Tottenham under Roberto De Zerbi for a combined £185m. That left the club working further down a list that includes Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Santos, Standard Sport understands, is open to leaving Chelsea in search of regular minutes, with Newcastle also registering interest. TEAMtalk reports that United are preparing a move for Tchouaméni, with talks with Real Madrid said to be imminent. Los Blancos are reluctant to sell and would demand at least €100m (£85m). Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is another name in the frame, though Dortmund value the 25-year-old at around €120m (approximately £103m). Ederson, then, is the straightforward piece of this summer’s puzzle. He is a footballer whose ceiling is clear and whose fit for a ball-playing midfield is credible.
