Pedro Gonçalves to Aston Villa: The deal that keeps coming back around
Pedro Gonçalves to Aston Villa: Aston Villa had a £33.8m offer rejected for Pedro Gonçalves, and yet, somehow, the odds of him ending up at Villa Park have never been better.
Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur reported that Villa submitted the €40m bid, which Sporting CP knocked back without serious consideration. Standard stuff. The Portuguese club had done it before. Bayer Leverkusen got the same treatment with a €30m (£25.4m) proposal back in 2023. But things inside Alvalade have quietly, unmistakably shifted.
According to A Bola, both Sporting and Gonçalves himself have decided a summer exit is the right call. Six years. Three Primeira Liga titles. Done. The club’s internal thinking centres on roughly €30m, a marked drop from the fee that got Villa’s offer waved away. With no concrete proposals flooding in, that number could fall even further. Reports from Portugal suggest Sporting may accept somewhere between €20m and €25m (approximately £16.9m to £21.2m).
Super-agent Jorge Mendes is expected to take personal control of the operation once his other ongoing negotiations are wrapped up. That gives this one a certain inevitability. When Mendes gets involved, things move.
Why the player makes so much sense
Gonçalves finished the 2025/26 Primeira Liga season with 13 goals and 8 assists in 27 league appearances. It was his best goal return since 2022/23. A reminder of what this player looks like when fit and firing. Across all competitions for Sporting this season, he chipped in 15 goals and 9 assists from 40 outings. His underlying numbers back it up too: 3.74 shots per 90 minutes, 2.48 key passes per game, and an expected assists figure that placed him in the top one per cent of Primeira Liga players.
He’s not some product of a weaker league either. His 97 goals and 66 assists across 239 Sporting appearances came in a side that consistently competed in European football. His strike from near the halfway line against Arsenal in the 2022/23 Europa League knockout rounds is still talked about.
Unai Emery likes players who operate between the lines. He wants attackers who can go inside from wide positions and contribute to both build-up and end product. Gonçalves, who has largely played off the left, fits that brief precisely. Villa’s Champions League football only strengthens the attraction. Saudi clubs are interested, but Portuguese sources note the 27-year-old’s primary ambition is to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The dynamic at Sporting broke down in part following a Portuguese Cup defeat to Torreense, after which Gonçalves publicly discussed the psychological toll of his lengthy muscle injury. His comments didn’t land well with club president Frederico Varandas. That episode, per A Bola, strengthened the feeling internally that this summer was the moment for both parties to move on cleanly.
Sporting originally paid €13.5m (£11.4m) in total to secure Gonçalves’ economic rights, with Famalicão retaining a 10% sell-on clause. Whatever fee gets agreed, the Lisbon side will still turn a healthy profit. With Rodrigo Zalazar already in from Braga for a club-record €30m, Sporting aren’t building around Gonçalves anymore.
Villa’s bid history tells its own story. A club that was willing to spend £33.8m on this player at the height of Sporting’s resistance could now conceivably land him for considerably less. That’s a position most clubs could only dream of walking into.
