Arsenal have reignited their interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as Mikel Arteta searches for cover after William Saliba suffered a significant back injury during the World Cup. The latest report puts Arsenal’s opening position at £30 million, while Villa want roughly £60 million for the 28-year-old England international. Goal.com previously reported Arsenal’s interest after BBC reporting identified Konsa among the club’s defensive targets, while subsequent coverage has confirmed that the Gunners have returned to the case after exploring other options.

Ezri Konsa Arsenal Transfer: Arsenal revive pursuit

Villa have little reason to rush. Konsa has two years left on his contract, and the club still want him to sign an extension. He remains a key figure for Unai Emery, although Villa have sanctioned major departures this summer, including Morgan Rogers‘ move to Chelsea. Arsenal therefore face a sizeable gap before any agreement can emerge.

Ezri Konsa Arsenal Transfer makes sense for Arsenal, but £60m changes the calculation

There is a strong football case here. Konsa started all 34 of Villa’s Premier League matches last season, played 3,036 minutes, completed 95% of his passes and won 67.11% of his duels. His versatility matters too: he can play centrally or cover at right-back, which suits Arteta’s demands for defenders who can alter their positioning during matches. Goal has highlighted that flexibility as a major attraction.

His World Cup only strengthened the case. Konsa appeared in eight matches for England and scored in the 6-4 third-place victory over France. Yet Arsenal should pause at £60 million. Paying that sum for a 28-year-old who could return to a secondary role once Saliba recovers carries genuine financial risk.

Ezri Konsa Arsenal Transfer needs a hard decision

Arsenal’s problem remains urgent. Saliba’s absence removes an elite option, while Jurriën Timber has faced his own fitness issues, leaving Arteta short of proven defensive depth. Cristian Romero offered another route, but Tottenham’s position made that move difficult, while John Stones provides a cheaper alternative on a free transfer, albeit with a poor recent fitness record.

My view is that Arsenal will eventually push the fee towards Villa’s valuation because Konsa offers Premier League experience, England pedigree and positional flexibility. The £30 million opening stance won’t get this done. A package near £60 million could. Arsenal have to decide whether emergency cover is worth paying near-full market price, because Villa have little incentive to blink.
