Gunners secure highly rated teenage defender directly from arch rivals after contract standoff

Arsenal have emerged as the club most strongly linked with Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood, with The Sun reporting that Mikel Arteta’s side are preparing an offer that could reach £51m. Manchester United retain a longstanding interest in the 21-year-old, while Manchester City have monitored his situation too, creating a three-way contest for one of Brighton’s most versatile academy graduates. The report places Brighton’s valuation between £43m and £51m, although Hinshelwood signed a new contract in March that runs until June 2029.

Jack Hinshelwood Transfer: Arsenal prepare move as rivals interested

There’s a reason clubs keep asking questions. Hinshelwood can operate in midfield and at either full-back position, while his senior record already includes 79 appearances and 12 goals across competitions. The assist figure needs a little care: available databases disagree, so the widely repeated seven-assist figure should not receive the same confidence as his appearance and goal totals.

Why Arsenal want the £51m option

Arsenal have already spent £75m on Bruno Guimarães this summer, yet the Hinshelwood interest makes sense if the club want another player who can cover several tactical roles. Guimarães gives the midfield greater control, while Hinshelwood could provide cover behind established starters and offer an alternative at full-back.

The bigger point concerns his development. Hinshelwood has played Premier League football since 2023 and still has considerable room to improve. Arsenal’s recruitment team could view that combination of age, English eligibility and positional flexibility as worth Brighton’s premium.

Jack Hinshelwood Transfer: United and City offer different problems

United have spent about £85m on Tielemans and Andrey Santos, so adding another central midfielder would create a genuine selection battle. Carrick has already strengthened that department, which could make Arsenal the cleaner footballing choice for Hinshelwood if regular opportunities matter.

City, meanwhile, have committed £116m to Elliot Anderson and are rebuilding their midfield after Reijnders’ reported £52m move to Al-Qadsiah, while Rodri faces continued speculation over Barcelona.

Arsenal remain the most convincing destination on footballing grounds. Hinshelwood could add depth without demanding immediate star status, cover multiple positions and develop alongside Guimarães, Rice and Ødegaard. At £51m, Brighton would demand serious money, but Arsenal can justify that outlay if they see him as a long-term squad piece rather than a short-term fix. That makes the Gunners the strongest fit of the three.
