Glasgow Rangers have made a serious move for a 22-year-old Venezuelan striker, with a bid worth up to £7.4m reportedly placed for Portland Timbers forward Kevin Kelsy. Journalist Tom Bogert first reported the contact, with Rangers seeking attacking cover after Youssef Chermiti suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Portland, however, don’t want to lose an in-form attacker midway through their MLS campaign, while Kelsy hasn’t pushed for an exit.

That creates a difficult negotiation for Rangers, especially after their Europa League elimination left Derek McInnes needing a response. Rangers supporters have seen little return from the £4.7m January signing so far, with the German forward scoring once since his move from Hansa Rostock.

Ryan Naderi: Rangers need a different profile

Kelsy’s numbers explain the interest. The 6ft 4in forward has scored nine goals in 17 MLS appearances during 2026, according to the supplied report, and his aerial work stands out sharply. He has won 65% of his aerial duels this year, while Naderi managed only 35% last season.

That difference matters in Scotland. Rangers often need a striker who can attack crosses, occupy centre-backs and give teammates an outlet when opponents press high. Kelsy can offer those traits, although MLS production won’t guarantee the same output at Ibrox.

The fee raises another question. Rangers could spend £7.4m on a player whose current club has little reason to sell, and that imbalance gives Portland significant leverage. They can demand stronger terms because Kelsy remains under contract, remains productive and hasn’t made his position difficult.

Ryan Naderi: Rangers face a tight deadline

Portland sit in the middle of their domestic season, while Rangers need reinforcements quickly after European disappointment and Chermiti’s injury. A long negotiation could leave McInnes short of a trusted number nine at a crucial stage.

Still, Kelsy makes more sense than another speculative punt. His 2025 MLS campaign produced seven goals, while his 2026 scoring rate has climbed sharply. He brings size, penalty-box presence and a clearer target-man profile, giving Rangers something different.

Rangers’ performances have created the need for competition, but Kelsy shouldn’t arrive simply as a replacement label. Rangers need someone capable of changing matches, especially when opponents defend deep. If Portland accept a package close to £7.4m, the transfer could solve a genuine squad problem, though Rangers would pay heavily to force a mid-season seller’s hand.
