Liverpool Transfer News has another Aleksandar Stanković twist after Tuttomercato reported that Liverpool tried to bring the 21-year-old midfielder into the negotiations that sent Curtis Jones to Inter Milan. The report cites TEAMtalk and says the Reds approached, but Inter rejected it. TEAMtalk’s wording was: “Liverpool made an enquiry about Stankovic” during the talks.
The report says the approach formed part of the Jones talks, rather than a pursuit. Liverpool’s interest therefore existed before the window closed, while Inter kept Stanković in Italy.
Inter had already committed €23 million to activate the buy-back clause in June, taking Stanković back from Club Brugge on a contract running until 2031. His 2025/26 season in Belgium gave Inter good reason to keep him, as he helped Brugge win the league and collected the division’s Young Player of the Year award. Across competitions, he produced nine goals and five assists.
Liverpool completed Jones’ move to Inter, yet Stanković remained in Italy. That decision is significant because Premier League clubs have tracked him, while Inter rejected a reported €40 million Brentford bid in August. Stanković has since made limited Serie A appearances, recording 15 minutes across two substitute outings this season, according to FotMob.

I would resist a January deal, even though Stanković’s profile makes sense on paper. Andoni Iraola wants midfielders who can cover ground quickly, win duels and protect the back line when Liverpool press high. Stanković brings his physical traits, strong positional discipline and the ability to receive possession in front of the defence. His long-range striking adds another weapon, too.
Yet the question is match readiness. 15 Serie A minutes by September 21 gives Liverpool little evidence that he can handle a Premier League run-in straight away. His Belgian campaign showed a return, but the jump in intensity would still carry an adaptation risk.
Another concern involves his mobility. Stanković’s height can restrict lateral movement during wide transitions, especially against quick opponents attacking the spaces beside a defensive midfielder. His experience in Switzerland and Belgium has helped his development, although Premier League pressing would test his decision-making at a different level.
Liverpool can use the academy while assessing established options. Trey Nyoni knows the club, has exposure and offers a midfield project. Inter hold a long contract and have rejected interest.
