Arsenal transfer news has taken an interesting turn, with Mikel Arteta reportedly keeping tabs on RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa ahead of the January transfer window. According to Fussball News, via Transfer Feed, Arsenal rank among the clubs showing the strongest interest in the 21-year-old, who has attracted attention through his performances in Germany.
Reports suggest Arsenal could consider an opening proposal worth approximately €40m. However, Leipzig reportedly value their attacker between €60m and €65m and have little intention of accepting a substantially lower offer. With Nusa contracted until 2029, the Bundesliga side holds a strong negotiating position.
There is a footballing reason behind Arsenal’s interest. Nusa offers directness, close control and the ability to beat defenders in isolated situations. His preference for cutting inside from the left could give Arteta another attacking option, particularly against opponents who defend deep and leave little room between the lines.
Why does Antonio Nusa interest Arsenal despite their attacking depth?
Arsenal already possess several options across their attacking positions, including Christos Tzolis, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke. Consequently, another winger would need to offer something genuinely different rather than simply increase competition for minutes.
Nusa’s recent performances provide some encouragement. The Norwegian international has reportedly registered three goals and two assists across six Leipzig appearances. Those numbers suggest he has started the campaign with confidence, although Arsenal would need to assess his consistency over a longer period.
His one-against-one ability could prove particularly useful when Arsenal struggle to break down compact defensive units. Martinelli offers pace and attacking movement, while Nusa brings another technical option on the left. Arteta could therefore use him as a tactical alternative rather than immediately handing him a regular starting position.
However, spending €60m or more on another attacking player would raise questions about Arsenal’s recruitment priorities, particularly if other areas require investment.
Should Arsenal pursue Nusa in January or wait until summer?
Arsenal should maintain their interest, but January shouldn’t become an excuse for paying above the market value.
A €40m opening proposal appears considerably below Leipzig’s reported demands. Their long contract protection gives them little reason to negotiate cheaply, especially during the middle of the season. Reports of their reluctance to sanction a winter departure make it even harder.
Arteta already has enough attacking personnel to manage the left flank without rushing into another expensive acquisition. Spending €60m-€65m on a player who might initially occupy a rotation role could create unnecessary pressure on the club’s wage structure and squad hierarchy.
My view is straightforward: Arsenal should continue monitoring Nusa and explore a deal around €45m, including achievable add-ons, rather than immediately meeting Leipzig’s demands. If the German club refuse, waiting until summer makes more financial sense.
Arsenal transfer news will inevitably attract attention whenever a promising young winger enters the conversation. However, Arteta must distinguish between a genuine squad requirement and an attractive market opportunity. Nusa has considerable potential, but Arsenal shouldn’t pay a premium simply because another club has set an ambitious asking price.
