Barcelona could open the door for Liverpool to sign Alejandro Balde on loan in January, according to TEAMtalk. The report claims Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, and Sunderland have all been in touch regarding the Spanish left-back.
For Liverpool, this development deserves attention. Arne Slot’s departure and Andoni Iraola’s summer appointment have brought another change in the dugout, while Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have both left Anfield. Consequently, the left-back position needs greater attention.
Earlier reports linked Liverpool with a permanent move for Balde, with Sport suggesting Barcelona could demand around €40 million. However, a newer TEAMtalk report points to a possible loan arrangement, although neither Barcelona’s willingness nor Liverpool’s interest has been independently confirmed.
Liverpool transfer news: Could Alejandro Balde solve Iraola’s left-back problem?
Liverpool need more reliable competition for Milos Kerkez, who arrived from Bournemouth in 2025. The Hungarian has struggled to establish himself consistently, leaving Iraola with questions about his options on the left.
Balde offers a different profile. The 22-year-old brings considerable pace, attacking intent and the ability to carry possession into advanced areas. His acceleration could prove particularly useful in Iraola’s high-pressing approach, where full-backs must cover considerable ground and support attacks.
However, Liverpool must examine his availability carefully. Balde has experienced injury problems, while his recent lack of regular football raises questions about his match sharpness. Signing him permanently for approximately €40 million without assessing his fitness would carry unnecessary financial risk.
Barcelona previously resisted a loan approach from Manchester United during the summer, according to earlier reports. Their reported willingness to consider a temporary departure now could allow Liverpool to negotiate more favourable terms.
There is another encouraging detail. Liverpool and Barcelona recently completed Ronald Araujo’s quick loan move to Anfield, demonstrating that both clubs can maintain productive transfer discussions.
Should Iraola prioritise a loan deal for Balde over a permanent transfer?
In my opinion, Liverpool should pursue a January loan with an option to buy rather than immediately committing €40 million.
Iraola needs competition for Kerkez without sacrificing a substantial portion of his transfer budget. Balde’s pace and attacking qualities make him an attractive candidate, but his injury record creates legitimate concerns.
A temporary agreement would allow Liverpool to assess his fitness, consistency and suitability within Iraola’s system before making a permanent commitment. A fixed purchase option would provide additional financial clarity if he delivers.
Competition could complicate negotiations, though. Everton, Fulham and Sunderland reportedly have an interest, meaning Liverpool must present a convincing sporting project and offer Balde meaningful first-team opportunities.
For Liverpool, this transfer news presents an opportunity worth pursuing, but there is little reason to rush into a permanent commitment. Iraola needs a dependable left-back, not another expensive uncertainty. A loan with an option to buy offers the sensible middle ground.
