Juventus have identified Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni as a potential target as they look to strengthen their Italian contingent. The Serie A giants reportedly explored a loan move, although Liverpool showed little interest in that proposal. The situation remains unconfirmed, but it raises an interesting question for Liverpool transfer news.

Leoni joined Liverpool from Parma in August 2025 for a reported £26m fee. The 19-year-old arrived with considerable potential after impressing in Italian football, but his first season at Anfield suffered a major setback.

During Liverpool’s Carabao Cup meeting with Southampton in September 2025, the youngster suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The serious knee problem ruled him out for an extended period and interrupted his development at a crucial stage.

According to The Athletic, Leoni is expected to return to full training during the week beginning 12 October 2026. However, he hasn’t returned to competitive action, meaning Juventus must wait before properly assessing his progress.

Liverpool transfer news: Why Juventus want Giovanni Leoni

Juventus have a clear reason to monitor Leoni, particularly given their interest in strengthening the Italian presence within their squad.

At 19, the defender offers considerable room for improvement, while his previous experience in Serie A gives him an advantage over several young centre-back options. His physical qualities, composure and potential make him an attractive prospect.

A move back to Italy could provide valuable opportunities once he regains full fitness. Juventus would offer a familiar footballing environment, although Liverpool remain responsible for protecting their investment.

There is another complication. Leoni hasn’t played senior football since September 2025, and Liverpool must assess his fitness before considering any temporary departure. Juventus reportedly made a loan enquiry, but neither the approach nor Liverpool’s response has received reliable independent confirmation.

Should Liverpool keep rejecting loan approaches for Leoni?

Liverpool should reject an immediate loan, particularly before Leoni completes his return to team training. Sending him elsewhere without establishing his physical condition would introduce unnecessary risks.

The Reds have several defensive considerations across the 2026-27 campaign, and a fully recovered Leoni could provide useful depth. His £26m transfer fee makes it equally important to protect his development rather than rush him into another environment.

However, January could present a different opportunity. If Leoni regains fitness but struggles to secure regular appearances, Juventus could offer an excellent route to competitive football.

Any agreement should include a recall clause, meaningful playing-time expectations and no purchase obligation. Liverpool shouldn’t surrender control of a promising defender after such a serious injury.

My verdict? Keep him at Anfield until January, then reassess. A carefully managed Serie A loan could benefit everyone, but Liverpool transfer news shouldn’t turn a promising teenager into a premature transfer decision.
