A £25m-rated 29-year-old striker has emerged as a potential Manchester United January target, with Crystal Palace ready to listen to offers for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Football Insider reports that Palace could cash in during January rather than risk losing the France international for nothing in June 2027. AC Milan and several Saudi Pro League clubs have registered interest, while Tottenham have previously monitored the situation.

Should Manchester United make Jean-Philippe Mateta a January priority?

For Manchester United, this is where the argument gets interesting. Michael Carrick’s side have won just two of their opening seven matches, and their attack has struggled to provide enough threat.

Mateta offers something different. He stands 6ft 3in, can lead the press, attack crosses and occupy centre-backs, while his Premier League record includes more than 10 goals in each of the last three seasons.

Joshua Zirkzee has struggled to provide that same focal point, although Manchester United have already invested heavily in younger forwards, including Benjamin Sesko. Adding another striker at 29 would therefore represent a short-term move rather than a clear continuation of the club’s recruitment model.

Still, context matters. Mateta’s contract situation gives United an opportunity to negotiate a lower fee, especially with Palace facing the prospect of losing him without compensation next summer. Football Insider previously reported Palace’s valuation at £25m.

Would Mateta clash with INEOS’ long-term recruitment plan?

I don’t think a January move would automatically conflict with INEOS’ youth strategy. United need immediate production, and Mateta could provide a proven Premier League option without demanding a huge transfer fee.

There is, however, one major concern. AC Milan abandoned their £30m deal in February after medical examinations raised concerns over Mateta’s right knee, an issue linked to his previous meniscus injury.

That history means United would need an extremely thorough medical before committing significant money or wages. Mateta reportedly earns around £65,000 a week, according to salary estimates.

For Manchester United transfer news, this feels like a sensible short-term gamble only if Palace accept a cut-price deal and the medical raises no fresh concerns. A £15m-£20m package could make sense. Paying £25m or more for a disgruntled 29-year-old with a recent medical issue would be much harder to justify.
