Internal rift at Tottenham, as the board is divided over Thomas Frank’s future
Graeme Bailey, reporting for TeamTalk, reveals a significant fracture within the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy. The dispute concerns the tenure of manager Thomas Frank. The club’s leadership officially says they want to avoid sacking him mid-season. However, dissenting voices are growing louder behind the scenes.
Vinai Venkatesham took over as CEO at Spurs after leaving Arsenal. He put his reputation on the line by appointing Frank last summer after Ange Postecoglou left. Venkatesham saw the former Brentford boss as the right man to lead the club forward. He pointed to Frank’s character and how well he fit the club’s values as the main reasons for the hire.
However, the report reveals that key figures on the Spurs board warned Venkatesham against this move from the start. These internal critics argued that Frank’s tactical style would not work with the current players. An unnamed source told TeamTalk that while Vinai likes Frank’s personality and leadership, the specific tactical demands he puts on the team have caused friction.
The main worry is that the players aren’t buying in. The squad reportedly likes the 52-year-old Austrian manager as a person, but they have serious doubts about whether his system actually works on the pitch. Tottenham are currently sitting in 14th place. They have managed just one win in their last seven matches. This slump hit a new low with Saturday’s FA Cup exit against Aston Villa. So, those early warnings now look spot on.
The Looming deadline and tactical disconnect
Things at N17 are reaching a breaking point. The upcoming games against West Ham United and Borussia Dortmund will likely decide Frank’s fate. The board is still preaching patience. Even so, if they don’t get results in these big matches, the club might have to act before the season ends.
The bosses might see the Dortmund game in the Champions League as the final straw. It will show if Frank can really cut it at the highest level. The team might get beaten badly or look completely lost in these games. If that happens, the pressure from fans and internal critics will be too much for Venkatesham to ignore.

Tactically, Frank is struggling to make his rigid system work with this group of players. This team was built for a different brand of football. The players clearly look stuck between two minds. They are following orders, but they don’t seem to believe in them.
Frank wants a very specific way of pressing and defending. The current players find these ideas confusing and unnatural. This has led to messy performances and a shaky defence. When a manager loses the players’ trust in his tactics, things rarely turn around without a big change.
There is a clear gap between what Frank wants on paper and what the players are doing on the pitch. It suggests that the system fit warning Venkatesham ignored is now the main reason for the club’s current mess.
