Manchester United have set their sights on West Ham‘s El Hadji Malick Diouf ahead of the summer transfer window, with The Guardian first breaking the story. The 21-year-old Senegalese left-back joined West Ham last summer from Slavia Prague for £19 million.
While he struggled to adjust to the Premier League’s pace at first, he eventually found his feet and has only improved as the months have passed. He has played 30 times for the Hammers this season, providing 5 assists and showing much better defensive work recently after initially being seen as more of an attacking threat.
United’s interest comes down to a very specific squad issue. Luke Shaw has been a regular this season, starting every Premier League game, but Patrick Dorgu looks likely to play as a left winger. It is that desire to keep Dorgu further forward that is driving United’s search for a new left-back.

Is Diouf actually ready to step up to a club like Manchester United?
To be honest, this looks like a good signing on paper, but United need to realise it won’t be perfect right away. Diouf’s crossing is excellent; his delivery and better defending in the second half of the season have made him a real threat, and he has the physical build United need on that side of the pitch.
He looked calm during the 1-1 draw between the two teams back in February, which caught the eye of Old Trafford officials. Those are great qualities. However, Diouf spent his first few months in England looking out of place, and moving from a struggling West Ham side to a club aiming for the Champions League is a massive jump.
