Bruno Fernandes stays: The ambition that kept him at Old Trafford
Bruno Fernandes has made it clear that Manchester United is still his top priority, having turned down several moves, including big-money offers from the Saudi Pro League, over the last three years. Speaking with Gary Neville on Sky Sports, the Portuguese captain explained that the dream of winning the Premier League and the Champions League with United is what drives him.
He didn’t shy away from the club’s tough 2024/25 season, which was their worst Premier League finish ever, but he insisted his commitment to his contract hasn’t changed. Fernandes said the emotional payoff of winning at Old Trafford is worth more than a bigger paycheck elsewhere, saying he feels he is “on the same ship” as the fans.
He also pointed out that while lifting the Carabao Cup and FA Cup were great, it isn’t enough for what he or the supporters really want. Now six years into his time at Manchester United, the 31-year-old is still the team’s main playmaker, hitting double-digit goals and assists year after year, even while the players around him have constantly changed. His decision to stay comes just before a massive summer rebuild, with Michael Carrick expected to seriously shake up the squad for 2026/27.
He said: “It’s not a question of loyalty. I could have gone two years ago, I could have gone three years ago, I could have gone last season, but I really like to be here.
“I think that being successful at this club is something that I can never get at another club. The joy and everything I get, the day I get what I want from this club, I don’t think I will get that from any other club in the world.
“I know how much the fans want this, I know how passionate they are. I know how much they are waiting for the club to come back again. I’m on the same ship as them. I want this ship; instead of being steady, I want it to go forward and to navigate as much as we can.
“Yeah, I won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup [but] what this club wants, what these fans want and what I want, myself and the team, we haven’t got that yet. Until my contract expires, I’m going to try.”

But until I get the chance or until I’m here to do that, I’m going to try. Is it going to be difficult? Yes. You have top clubs in the league that have been winning the league for so many years and being consistently there and we’re not.”

Having Fernandes stay is a relief, but it doesn’t fix the deeper issues that keep Manchester United behind teams like Liverpool and Manchester City. His stats are still impressive; he creates chances and moves the ball forward with real quality. However, Fernandes plays his best football alongside fast, mobile forwards, and Manchester United still don’t have enough of those players.

There’s also the fact that he can sometimes disappear from games when he’s under heavy pressure, which is more frustrating than his fans like to admit. The team really need another playmaker to take some of the weight off his shoulders. Keeping Fernandes helps boost morale and buys the club some time, but Carrick needs to build a reliable system rather than just hoping for individual moments of magic. Manchester United’s comeback depends on the whole team working together, and that work has to start this summer.
