Michael Carrick needed a result and got one in midweek, but the Manchester United Predicted Lineup against Aston Villa carries plenty of anxiety. United sit 17th after the worst start to a Premier League campaign in their history, and the 3-2 comeback win over AS Roma, secured by a late Matheus Cunha brace, snapped a grim winless run.
Sunday at Old Trafford tests whether that lift survives in domestic football. A second successive home victory would ease the pull of the relegation zone, and Carrick needs breathing space with rumours about his long-term future circulating before the international break.
Manchester United Predicted Lineup Against Aston Villa
Goalkeeper and defence
Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal, but the defence in front of him has been rebuilt out of necessity. Lisandro Martínez is suspended, Luke Shaw is recovering from a knock that should keep him out for a few days, and Patrick Dorgu is doubtful with a hamstring problem. Harry Maguire is the experienced figure Carrick is expected to lean on alongside Ayden Heaven, and his calm in the penalty area would help a young side short on composure.
Our prediction pairs Heaven with Matthijs de Ligt instead, with Maguire the senior alternative if Carrick wants more experience. De Ligt’s comfort on the ball gives United a reliable first pass out of defence, and Heaven can settle beside him. Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot take the full-back roles.
Yoro is a natural centre-back, so his recovery pace and positioning should cover the space behind whichever full-back pushes forward. That balance is important because United cannot afford to be stretched while their centre-backs are still building a partnership.
Midfield
Carlos Baleba is out until late November with the hamstring injury he picked up against Roma, and Manuel Ugarte will not return until early April after his cruciate ligament injury, which leaves Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo as the likeliest pairing.
Tielemans provides the passing range to set the tempo, while Mainoo offers close control and the composure to receive the ball under pressure. Mainoo will also need to protect the back four more than usual, because a makeshift defence cannot afford repeated transitions.
Attack
Bryan Mbeumo leads the line in the 4-2-3-1, with Benjamin Šeško sidelined by a leg injury until early January and Marcus Rashford’s hip problem expected to keep him out for a few days. Mbeumo’s runs in behind and his pressing give United an outlet when the ball is won high.
Bruno Fernandes sits behind him as the creative hub, linking midfield and attack. Amad Diallo and Cunha operate from the flanks, with Amad’s dribbling stretching the opposition and Cunha arriving full of confidence after that late brace in Europe. United look most dangerous when Cunha and Fernandes combine in tight spaces.
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Senne Lammens – Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven, Diogo Dalot – Youri Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo – Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha – Bryan Mbeumo.
