Chelsea’s defensive problems have become difficult to ignore under Xabi Alonso, with the Blues conceding 15 goals in their opening eight Premier League matches. Sitting fifth in the table, they have shown attacking promise but continue to surrender chances, placing greater pressure on a young backline.
Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix and Josh Acheampong have featured in Alonso’s defensive plans, while Wesley Fofana offers another option. Yet the issue goes beyond numbers: Chelsea lack an experienced organiser who can keep the backline compact when opponents attack at pace.
The recent 2-0 defeat against Tottenham highlighted those concerns, particularly when Chelsea struggled to control transitions and protect their defence. Alonso’s system asks centre-backs to defend large spaces, maintain a high line and distribute accurately under pressure.
That leaves little room for hesitation, especially when opponents target the space behind the defence. Chelsea need defenders who can read danger early, communicate clearly and recover quickly when their pressing structure breaks down.
According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Chelsea could consider bringing Antonio Rüdiger back to Stamford Bridge when his Real Madrid contract expires at the end of the season. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Chelsea need an experienced defender and compared the potential move with their 2020 signing of Thiago Silva. Rüdiger would offer a familiar solution: a defender who already knows the club and has experience organising a back three under pressure.
The 33-year-old German international spent five years at Chelsea between 2017 and 2022, winning the Champions League and establishing a strong connection with supporters. His aggressive defending, recovery pace and experience in a back three could suit Alonso’s demands, particularly when Chelsea need someone to defend space behind the wing-backs. However, the report does not establish that Chelsea have made a formal offer, and interest from other Premier League and Saudi Pro League clubs could complicate negotiations.
Chelsea transfer news: Would Rudiger strengthen Chelsea without undermining their youth project?
A free transfer could offer Chelsea valuable experience without requiring a major fee, although wages, signing-on payments and contract length would still affect the overall cost. After substantial summer spending, the club must ensure any deal leaves room for other priorities rather than committing excessive resources to an ageing player.
Chelsea’s youth policy doesn’t rule out signing a 33-year-old. Thiago Silva’s arrival showed how an experienced centre-back can guide younger players while contributing on the pitch. Rüdiger could offer similar benefits, provided his fitness and salary demands suit the club’s plans. For Colwill and Acheampong, the right veteran would bring competition and guidance, while giving Alonso a reliable defensive organiser when matches become stretched.
