Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October, looking to recover after two successive defeats. Xabi Alonso’s side lost 2-0 to Tottenham in the Premier League before exiting the Carabao Cup against Liverpool on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Chelsea sit fifth with 13 points from eight league matches, having scored 17 goals and conceded 15. Their attacking quality remains clear, but defensive injuries have complicated Alonso’s preparations for a demanding fixture.
The Blues have some encouraging news. Cole Palmer returns after serving his suspension in the Liverpool cup tie, giving Alonso his main creative option again. However, Maxence Lacroix picked up a hamstring injury at Anfield, while João Pedro remains out with a thigh problem.
Reece James continues his recovery from knee surgery, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez remains unavailable with a broken jaw. Meanwhile, Pep Chavarría and Jamie Gittens have returned to training, although Caicedo and Malo Gusto face late fitness assessments.
Chelsea predicted lineup vs Manchester United
Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Mike Penders; Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill; Pedro Neto, Moisés Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Jorrel Hato; Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers; Geovany Quenda.
Penders should remain in goal, with Fofana replacing the injured Lacroix in the back three. Acheampong can cover the right side, using his pace to support Neto while tracking United’s wide attackers. Fofana would organise the central channel, leaving Colwill to defend the left and support Hato when Chelsea move forward.
Caicedo and Henderson could anchor the midfield, provided the Ecuadorian passes his fitness test. Neto offers attacking width, while Palmer should take a central creative role after his suspension. Rogers can support Quenda up front, giving Chelsea movement around the penalty area despite João Pedro’s absence.
Can Chelsea contain Manchester United’s attack?
Chelsea must protect the space behind their wing-backs, especially when Neto and Hato advance together. Caicedo’s positioning will be important, while Henderson must help the defence deal with United’s forward runs.
At the other end, Palmer can link with Rogers between the lines, creating space for Quenda to attack the centre-backs. Rogers’ movement should give Palmer another passing option near the box, while Neto can stretch the defence from the right. Chelsea need these combinations to produce clear chances rather than leaving Quenda isolated up front.
