Marcus Rashford wants to stay at Barcelona, but Manchester United hold the cards
Manchester United’s decision to send Marcus Rashford out on loan last summer is becoming a real headache to sort out. The 28-year-old has racked up 14 goals and 14 assists during his time at the Camp Nou, and on Sunday, he etched his name into the history books.
His brilliant free-kick in a 2-0 win over Real Madrid secured the La Liga title, making him the first Englishman to win the Spanish league in 41 years. After the match, he didn’t hide his feelings: “I don’t know. I am not a magician, but if I were, I would stay.” While his heart is clearly in Spain, the way forward is far from simple.
Barcelona have a £26m option to buy Rashford, but they’re tight on cash and hesitant to pull the trigger. Instead, the Catalan giants are considering a second season-long loan once negotiations restart this summer. Manchester United, meanwhile, have no plans to bring Rashford back into the fold.
They’re banking on finding a permanent buyer, even if Barça keep dragging their feet. The real deal-breaker is the money. His wages reportedly jumped back to £315,000 a week on a permanent contract. That’s a figure Barcelona can’t justify and one that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team is desperate to get off the books.

Rashford has truly found his feet in Hansi Flick’s setup. When he actually gets on the pitch, he shows the kind of directness and link-up play that completely vanished under former manager Ruben Amorim. That said, the Englishman is still prone to drifting out of games for long periods, which is why he remains stuck behind Lamine Yamal and Raphinha in the starting XI.

Do Manchester United actually want Rashford back, or is this just about the money?
To be honest, they don’t. Michael Carrick has completely turned things around at Old Trafford, and with Champions League football secured, the priority is spending on central players, not welcoming back a forward who has likely played his last game for the club. With a new head coach expected before the 2026-27 season, the incoming boss will want to pick their own front line. Rashford needs a fresh start, and Manchester United cutting ties for good is probably the best outcome for everyone.
