Manchester United eye Ederson as summer midfield search intensifies
Manchester United are in active talks with the representatives of Atalanta midfielder Ederson regarding a potential summer move, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. In a recent YouTube update, Romano confirmed that discussions between the club and the player’s camp are ongoing, with United well aware that Atalanta want €45 million for his signature.
The Brazilian defensive midfielder is currently valued at roughly €35.8 million, down from a high of €60.5 million in late 2024, and is under contract in Italy until June 2027. Romano pointed out, however, that Ederson is just one name on a broad shortlist, with five or six midfielders currently being tracked at Old Trafford. Manchester United could bring in two or three new faces in that position this summer, depending on who leaves the club and what opportunities pop up in the market.
Ederson’s 2025/26 Serie A stats show an energetic, all-action midfielder. Playing 2,145 minutes across 29 games, he chipped in with two goals and an assist while maintaining a tidy 89% pass completion rate. His 126 defensive actions, 56 tackles, and 128 recoveries prove he has the work rate Man United need, though an aerial duel success rate of 42.3% and an xG of 4.36 (compared to just two actual goals) suggest his finishing could use some work.

Do Manchester United actually need Ederson or just another body in midfield?
Ederson looks good on paper but deserves a closer look. The midfield has lacked grit and defensive protection for years, and Ederson directly addresses those gaps. His passing range, specifically a 71.3% long-ball accuracy, combined with his high recovery numbers, makes him exactly the kind of busy midfielder who thrives in Michael Carrick’s system, especially with the departure of Casemiro.

That said, a €45 million price tag for a player who often misses his chances feels high, especially since his market value has already taken a hit. Manchester United need to be smart with their cash this summer rather than making a panic buy.
