Manchester United New Signings That Must Follow The Atalanta Midfielder

Manchester United have secured a deal for Éderson from Atalanta, and the football world has taken notice. Talks over his prospective £43 million transfer are at an advanced stage, signalling genuine intent from INEOS and Michael Carrick going into a huge summer. Yet landing one midfielder, however impressive, does not paper over every crack at Old Trafford. The Red Devils need at least five signings this summer, and three positions remain glaringly open.

Manchester United New Signings in Midfield: Sandro Tonali from Newcastle

Sandro Tonali has grown into a major presence at St James’ Park since arriving, earning 30 caps for Italy and contributing 10 goals across 102 appearances for Newcastle. Manchester United view him as the long-term successor to Casemiro, and the logic is sound. Tonali wants Champions League football in 2026-27, and Manchester United have got that next season. Newcastle hold firm with a reported £100 million asking price, but United will only pursue a deal if the price drops to a workable level. Even so, a player of Tonali’s profile, press-resistance, and positional intelligence is exactly the profile Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 demands. United should push hard on this one.

Manchester United New Signings at Left-Back: Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal

After a stellar breakout in 2024-25 where Lewis-Skelly made 39 appearances, the teenager has struggled for minutes under Mikel Arteta this season, featuring just 14 times in the Premier League. Arsenal are reportedly prepared to cash in, and United have registered clear interest. A new left-back would benefit the club ahead of a campaign juggling European and domestic competitions, particularly with Luke Shaw turning 31 in July and carrying a persistent injury record. Lewis-Skelly offers youth, versatility, and genuine Premier League quality. Furthermore, landing him from a direct rival would send a statement far beyond the transfer itself.

A Backup Striker to Support Benjamin Sesko

Rashford‘s position on the left wing is somewhere United could look to strengthen, but a backup striker is also on the agenda to suit Carrick’s system. Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as a credible option, bringing physicality and Premier League familiarity to a forward line that already includes Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Last summer, United spent over £200 million on attacking reinforcements, and those three forwards have scored 31 goals between them in 2025/26. Adding a reliable backup rather than another first-choice option represents smart, considered squad-building.

Manchester United new signings of this calibre, combined with Éderson’s arrival, would represent a genuine statement of ambition. Carrick deserves the tools to compete properly in the Champions League, and Old Trafford has waited long enough for a squad built to last.
