Chelsea suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on October 24, 2026, in the Premier League, as two late incidents settled a contest that had remained goalless for more than an hour. Mike Penders’ mistake handed Spurs the lead before Cole Palmer’s dismissal left Xabi Alonso‘s side with another problem to solve.
Chelsea started without the injured Joao Pedro, forcing Alonso to change his attacking setup. Geovany Quenda earned a starting place, while Morgan Rogers operated through the middle with Palmer behind him.
Tottenham enjoyed better possession during the first half, but Penders kept Chelsea in the contest with important saves against Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel. Antonin Kinsky responded at the other end, denying Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto as neither side found a breakthrough.
After the interval, Chelsea struggled to turn possession into clear chances, while Tottenham continued to threaten. Then, in the 77th minute, Penders mishandled Mateus Fernandes’ corner under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, conceding an own goal. Palmer received a second yellow card three minutes later for a challenge on Conor Gallagher, and Tel sealed Tottenham’s victory with an excellent individual finish in the 87th minute.
Chelsea recorded seven shots and 31.5% possession. Here are the player ratings, based on their contributions throughout the contest.
Chelsea player ratings vs Tottenham:
Goalkeeper and defenders
Mike Penders – 3/10: Made important first-half saves against Marmoush and Tel, but his handling error gifted Tottenham the opener and changed the contest.
Josh Acheampong – 6/10: Worked hard against Tottenham’s attacking movement and helped Chelsea withstand early pressure, although the defence eventually lost its grip as the visitors increased their threat.
Maxence Lacroix – 6/10: Made several clearances and battled to protect Chelsea’s penalty area, but couldn’t prevent Tottenham from breaking through during the closing stages.
Levi Colwill – 6/10: Helped contain Tottenham before the break, although the visitors found greater space as Chelsea struggled to regain control.
Jorrel Hato – 6/10: Offered defensive stability before Marco Palestra replaced him in the 65th minute.
Midfielders
Moisés Caicedo – 6/10: Covered ground diligently and attempted to launch counter-attacks, but Chelsea’s inability to retain possession limited his influence in midfield.
Jordan Henderson – 5/10: Found a first-half shooting opportunity but couldn’t beat Kinsky. Later, he combined with Palmer to help create Estevao’s chance, showing greater attacking involvement as Chelsea searched for an equaliser.
Cole Palmer – 3/10: Tested Kinsky early but struggled to influence proceedings consistently. His dismissal for a challenge on Gallagher left Chelsea chasing the game with ten men and severely reduced their chances of salvaging a result.
Forwards
Pedro Neto – 6/10: Forced Kinsky into a first-half save with a free-kick and threatened again after the restart, but couldn’t provide the finishing touch Chelsea needed.
Geovany Quenda – 4/10: Struggled to influence Chelsea’s attack before Alonso replaced him with Estevao in the 72nd minute.
Morgan Rogers – 5/10: Linked up with Palmer and threatened with a left-footed attempt, but an offside decision ruled out the opportunity. He couldn’t provide the central attacking threat Chelsea needed.
Substitutes
Marco Palestra – 5/10: Replaced Hato and occupied the left side of defence, but couldn’t prevent Tottenham’s late breakthrough.
Estevao – 6/10: Added attacking intent after replacing Quenda and fired into the side netting following a combination with Palmer and Henderson. His direct approach offered Chelsea a brief attacking spark.
Danny Welbeck – N/A: Replaced Neto in the 88th minute and had little time to influence the result.
