Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils join the scramble for Julián Álvarez

Manchester United transfer news: Manchester United have initiated contact with Julián Álvarez’s representatives. According to Diario AS journalist Marcos Duran, the Red Devils are now firmly in the mix, alongside Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain.

It is a crowded queue. Midfield remains the priority at Old Trafford this summer, but the club refuse to rule out a marquee striker. Securing Champions League football changes the landscape completely, boosting United’s leverage with the Argentine camp.

The 26-year-old boasts brilliant numbers. He netted 20 goals and supplied nine assists in 49 games for Atlético Madrid this past season. His European form was particularly devastating, yielding 10 goals in just 15 Champions League appearances.

His contract runs until 2030. Publicly, Diego Simeone’s side demand his €500 million release clause. Privately, certain elite clubs can negotiate around the €150 million mark. Following Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria, Álvarez admitted a move would be best for all parties, sparking this current frenzy.

Does Michael Carrick actually need him?

No. Frankly, he doesn’t.

United’s engine room is completely depleted. Casemiro is gone. Manuel Ugarte looks set to follow him out the door. While Ederson has arrived from Atalanta for €45 million, the spine is still incredibly thin. Blowing up to €150 million on a striker right now is a massive misreading of squad priorities. Kobbie Mainoo faces immense burnout with European nights returning. Midfield is the fire that needs extinguishing.

True, Benjamin Sesko needs help. He is decent, but he is not yet an elite, title-winning talisman. Álvarez managed 20 goals in a rigid, defensive Atlético setup. Put him in Carrick’s fluid 4-2-3-1, and he would thrive on better service.

But the finances make no sense. Atlético want £120 million minimum. Barcelona are hovering, and Álvarez has openly flirted with the Nou Camp. Arsenal and PSG have deeper pockets and immediate pull. United are rebuilding, not replicating Europe’s absolute elite just yet.

Carrick needs natural width and another midfield anchor. He cannot afford a luxury vanity project, especially one looking longingly at Spain. Initial contact makes sense for a club of United’s stature, but triggering this deal would be a step too far.
