Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils face a harsh financial reality check over double midfield swoop

Manchester United transfer news: Old Trafford wants both. Michael Carrick and Jason Wilcox fancy a massive statement window, but the arithmetic is brutal. Word from journalist Ben Jacobs confirms Manchester United simply cannot afford to buy both Aurélien Tchouaméni and Mateus Fernandes this summer. It is one or the other. Period.

Look at the numbers. Real Madrid want £87 million (€100m) for Tchouaméni. José Mourinho is shuffling the pack in Spain, making the Frenchman expendable, but he won’t go cheap. Meanwhile, West Ham value Fernandes at a hefty £80-85 million. Tottenham are sniffing around too. That is a combined £167 million on just two players.

INEOS did hand Carrick a £200 million war chest. Sounds great on paper. Except Atalanta’s Éderson already swallowed £35-38 million of that pot. Do the maths. Splurging the remaining cash on two midfielders leaves nothing for a left-back, a centre-half, or a proper goalscorer.

Why Mateus Fernandes makes the most sense for Carrick?

Fernandes is the obvious shout. He is 21, full of energy, and already knows the Premier League inside out. Yes, he played for a relegated side. Don’t let that fool you. The kid is press-resistant, loves a tackle, and operates perfectly as a modern hybrid six-eight. West Ham don’t want to lose him, but they have to sell. The door is wide open. Tottenham are pushing hard, which means United must move fast.

Then you have Tchouaméni. At 26, the Real Madrid man brings Champions League pedigree and serious physical presence. He looks the business. Yet, his form in Spain has been wildly inconsistent lately. Is he really worth risking £87 million of a strictly limited budget? No chance. Not when the squad needs surgical repairs across multiple positions. Chasing luxury names risks completely derailing the wider rebuild.

Manchester United need to be smart here. Chasing Galácticos is a legacy habit they need to kick. If Wilcox plays his cards right, he can probably snag Fernandes for around £70-75 million. That leaves plenty of loose change to sort out the leaky defence and find a proper alternative up front.

They can always look at Tchouaméni next year if Madrid drop their price. For now, the London Stadium youngster fits the rebuild perfectly. Carrick needs reliable components, not expensive gambles that break the bank before the season even kicks off. Wilcox needs to pick up the phone and close the Fernandes deal today.
