Manchester United transfer news: Chido Obi set for FC Köln loan move

Manchester United transfer news: Manchester United striker Chido Obi is in talks with FC Köln over a season-long loan move. This one is important. The summer transfer window always brings plenty of noise, but the Obi situation tells you exactly how the club views development.

He made his senior debut back in February 2025 against Tottenham Hotspur. Next came a first Premier League start against Brentford in May of that year. At 17 years and 156 days, he became the youngest player ever to start a top-flight match for United. Massive expectation followed. Then came the reality check.

The staff felt he had been thrown into senior football too early. Injuries did not help either. Because of that, he spent the entirety of 2025-26 back in academy football rather than with the first team. It is a hard pill to swallow for any teenager who has already tasted Premier League minutes. His youth numbers, however, speak for themselves.

What Obi produced in 2025-26

Nine goals across 18 Premier League 2 appearances. Four goals in five FA Youth Cup games. One goal and two assists in three EFL Trophy outings. That is the full picture of his campaign. He also boasts 19 goals in 40 Under-21 appearances overall, alongside 17 goals and two assists in 16 Under-18 outings since joining United. Clinical.

FC Köln finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season. They desperately need goals and routinely give younger players room to breathe. For a teenager with barely 10 senior appearances to his name, Germany looks like the perfect fit.

With INEOS prioritising an experienced striker signing this summer, United will not block his pathway. Transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke first broke the news of the talks. The broad picture makes sense. United rate the Danish forward highly, but they refuse to rush him into a first-team role he is not physically ready to sustain week in, week out. Köln get a striker with elite finishing instincts. United get back a player with proper senior minutes under his belt.
