Arsenal have opened preliminary talks with the entourage of Lille attacker Matias Fernandez-Pardo, according to a report from Caught Offside. The 21-year-old Belgium international has attracted Mikel Arteta‘s attention because of his ability to operate across the front line, centrally or out wide. That sort of flexibility is exactly what Arsenal want as they push for attacking cover before the window closes.
Arsenal transfer news: Arsenal open talks for frozen-out Lille attacker, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, but should they bother?
The situation at Lille is fractured. Fernandez-Pardo is no longer training with the first team after a very public falling out, which has accelerated interest from several clubs. Arsenal transfer news around this deal, though, comes with a sizeable catch. Lille are holding firm at £60 million, a figure that reflects the French club’s leverage rather than any realistic sense of desperation.
Julian Alvarez is the key variable. If the Atletico Madrid forward doesn’t move to north London, Arsenal are expected to push harder for Fernandez-Pardo. Newcastle United, though, are already deep in talks and are reportedly closer to getting a deal across the line, offering the youngster something Arsenal cannot guarantee: regular starts immediately.
Now for the honest part.
Paying £60 million for Fernandez-Pardo right now would be a significant error in judgement. The numbers don’t support it, and the context makes it worse.
Start with his output. Eight non-penalty goals in 29 Ligue 1 appearances last season, roughly 0.3 per 90 minutes, is modest for a player at this price bracket. That alone wouldn’t be damning, but his advanced numbers are. His expected goals figure sat at 10.54, meaning he underperformed by more than two goals. He missed chances he was expected to take. A shot accuracy of just 44.12% and 103 recorded instances of losing possession point to a forward who is still very much a work in progress, not a £60m ready-made solution.
Tactically, the fit is questionable too. Arsenal transfer news obsessives will argue versatility is a premium, but Arteta’s possession system demands ball security above almost everything else. Fernandez-Pardo’s passing accuracy, anywhere between 73.8% and 84% depending on competition, would stall Arsenal’s attacking rhythm in a high-press, high-structure setup. He thrives in transition, not in the patient, controlled phases Arteta builds around.
The context of the deal is what makes it most uncomfortable. Arsenal want him primarily because Alvarez hasn’t moved. That’s a fallback, not a strategy. Worse, the player has already been excluded from Lille’s squad over a social media dispute. Arteta runs an extremely tight dressing room. His cultural standards are non-negotiable. Bringing in a player who publicly clashed with his own club just weeks ago is a gamble that doesn’t fit how the manager operates.

Newcastle are ahead. Arsenal would almost certainly overpay to hijack this. Walking away and keeping that £60 million for a cleaner, better-targeted signing in January is the more rational play for Arsenal transfer news watchers to expect.
