Arsenal transfer news took a sharp turn on Deadline Day, with the Gunners ending the summer window without the marquee forward Mikel Arteta wanted. Arsenal did add Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, while Piero Hincapie’s loan became permanent, yet a busy exit list left the attack looking lighter.
Arsenal transfer news: Three targets stand out from the deals Gunners could not complete.
1. Julian Alvarez
Atletico Madrid’s 26-year-old striker represented Arsenal’s biggest attacking ambition. Reports put Atletico’s acceptable fee above £120 million, while Arsenal remained interested after Barcelona failed to pry him away. Alvarez, however, wanted Barcelona and never gave Arsenal the green light. Atletico eventually kept him, leaving Arteta without the versatile centre-forward who can lead the line, drop deep or attack space.
2. Morgan Rogers
Before Alvarez became the late headline, Rogers ranked among Arsenal’s major targets for the summer. The 23-year-old England international offered Premier League experience, could play centrally or from the left, and attracted serious interest from north London. Chelsea then won the race for him in a deal reported at £117 million. Arsenal refused to match that figure, despite earlier work on the transfer.
3. Malick Fofana
Arsenal returned to Fofana on Deadline Day as the club looked for a left-sided attacker after Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli departed. The 21-year-old Belgian had drawn Arsenal interest, but the Gunners would not meet Lyon’s valuation of around £30m-£35m. Sunderland stepped in instead and completed a deal worth about £30.8 million, after a dramatic late contest with Crystal Palace.
Arsenal’s forward group now has a striking gap. Gabriel Jesus joined Barcelona for around £8.6 million, while Martinelli moved to Al-Hilal for a club-record fee reported at £56 million. Tzolis remains the main new wide attacking option, alongside Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres.
The summer business gave Arsenal greater depth in midfield and defence, yet the attacking equation looks harder to ignore. Alvarez chose to stay at Atletico, Rogers joined Chelsea and Fofana signed for Sunderland. Those three missed deals tell the story of a window in which Arsenal set firm financial limits, even after generating major sales.
