Chelsea had expected a frantic finish to the summer window, but 1 September delivered three painful misses as Xabi Alonso’s recruitment plan hit late obstacles. Chelsea transfer news became dominated by deals that slipped away rather than another marquee arrival, with Enzo Fernández completing his £125m move to Manchester City and leaving a gap in midfield.
Chelsea transfer news: Three targets who got away
1. Lamine Camara
Lamine Camara looked set to solve Chelsea’s biggest problem. The 22-year-old Senegal international had agreed a six-year deal with the Blues, with a £47m transfer lined up, yet Monaco pulled the plug just after the 11 pm deadline. Their decision followed efforts to restructure Folarin Balogun’s £40m move to Everton, which later collapsed when Balogun changed his mind. Chelsea had no deal sheet in place, so the transfer could not survive the drama.
That leaves Alonso without the replacement Chelsea had prepared for Fernández. Worse still, the club had already committed to selling the Argentina midfielder before the Camara paperwork reached the finish line.
2. Manu Koné
Manu Koné became Chelsea’s emergency option. Talks accelerated on deadline day, and Chelsea even explored a move involving Jamie Bynoe-Gittens going the other way, but Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini blocked the exit. Reports said Roma considered Koné central to the Italian side’s plans, despite Chelsea pushing hard in the window.
It was a classic deadline-day problem: the buyer wanted urgency, while the seller had little reason to compromise.
3. Cody Gakpo
Cody Gakpo sits in a slightly different category. He was heavily discussed in the wider Premier League market, yet the late move that dominated reports involved Manchester City, not Chelsea. Liverpool ultimately rejected an £80m offer and kept the Netherlands forward after City’s pursuit collapsed.
For Chelsea, that matters because Gakpo represented the kind of versatile forward who could have added another route beside Cole Palmer, particularly after Mykhailo Mudryk’s loan move to Tottenham. Still, the evidence for a Chelsea bid is much weaker than for Camara or Koné.

The final picture feels awkward. Chelsea spent heavily this summer, yet the one position left exposed after a £125m sale still lacks its intended new starter. Alonso now has to make the midfield work, while Chelsea transfer news enters the autumn focused on a deal that vanished after the paperwork window closed.
