Sunderland predicted XI vs Brighton

Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, 10 October, for a difficult Premier League test. The Black Cats will need a disciplined midfield, sharp movement in attack, and greater possession control to trouble a Brighton side that can punish mistakes.

Sunderland’s recent results offer mixed encouragement. They beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 and Hull City by the same score, but Arsenal defeated them 2-0. Their 1-1 draw against Brentford showed resilience, while the 5-3 defeat against Manchester City exposed defensive problems against dangerous attacking players.

Those results make team selection particularly interesting. Sunderland must find the right balance between attacking ambition and defensive security, especially against opponents who can exploit spaces between the midfield and back four.

Sunderland predicted XI vs Brighton: Can Xhaka control midfield?

My predicted XI features Granit Xhaka and Chris Rigg in central midfield, with Enzo Le Fée operating in the advanced role. Wilson Isidor gets the nod up front, supported by three players who can stretch Brighton’s defence and create chances from wide positions.

Why could Sunderland choose this starting lineup?

Robin Roefs should start in goal, while Nordi Mukiele and Dayann Méthalie occupy the full-back positions. Kevin Danso partners Trai Hume in central defence, giving Sunderland a back four built around physical presence and defensive organisation.

Xhaka’s experience and passing range could prove valuable against Brighton’s pressing game. Meanwhile, Rigg would offer energy alongside the experienced midfielder, helping Sunderland compete for second balls and move possession into attacking areas.

Le Fée should operate behind Isidor, linking the midfield with the forward line. Thomas Meunier and Nilson Angulo would provide width, although their defensive responsibilities will matter just as much when Brighton attack down the flanks.

Isidor’s movement could give Sunderland an outlet when Brighton push forward. He would need support from the attacking midfielders, however, because isolated spells up front could allow the visitors to dominate possession and keep Sunderland pinned back.

Sunderland must remain compact without surrendering their attacking threat. The midfield pairing will have a major role in that battle, while the full-backs must choose their forward runs carefully. Brighton could punish any gaps left behind.

This remains my opinion-based selection rather than a confirmed team announcement. Sunderland’s final choices will depend on fitness, tactical decisions and the availability of players before kick-off. Daniel Ballard, Habib Diarra, Brian Brobbey and Romaine Mundle appear on the injury list, which raises further selection questions.

Sunderland predicted XI vs Brighton: Roefs; Mukiele, Danso, Hume, Méthalie; Xhaka, Rigg; Meunier, Le Fée, Angulo; Isidor (4-2-3-1).
