Arsenal could revisit their long-standing interest in Monaco defender Vanderson as Mikel Arteta considers his options at right-back ahead of the January transfer window.
Arsenal transfer news: Vanderson remains on the radar
According to TEAMtalk, via Transfer Feed, the Gunners continue to monitor the Brazilian, having followed his progress for an extended period. Their interest hasn’t disappeared, with the recruitment department continuing to assess his performances in recent weeks.
At 25, Vanderson offers considerable experience at the highest level and has developed into an energetic defender who enjoys attacking from wide positions. His ability to cover ground, support forward runs and compete aggressively could give Arteta another option against opponents who defend deep.
However, Arsenal’s current situation makes this potential transfer slightly different from previous windows. Jurrien Timber has returned to fitness and remains a major option on the right side of defence. The Dutchman gives Arteta considerable tactical flexibility because he can move inside, support the midfield and help Arsenal control possession.
Ben White’s uncertain future, though, creates another question. Arsenal cannot assume their existing defensive options will remain unchanged, particularly with several competitions demanding regular rotation. Consequently, Vanderson’s continued presence on Arsenal’s recruitment radar makes sense, although the timing of any move requires careful consideration.
Would Arsenal make Vanderson a January priority?
Vanderson would offer something different from Timber. Rather than primarily providing an inverted defensive option, the Brazilian can attack aggressively from the outside and stretch opposition defences through overlapping runs.
That could become valuable when Arsenal face teams that crowd the central areas and leave limited space for their midfielders. Roma’s Wesley presents another possibility. The Brazilian has attracted attention through his performances and offers similar attacking qualities from right-back. His age and potential resale value could make him an attractive option for Arsenal’s recruitment department.
However, Monaco reportedly have Vanderson contracted until 2028, meaning Arsenal might encounter difficult negotiations. Without a confirmed asking price, there is little reason to assume the club could secure him cheaply.
Would Arsenal be right to pursue Vanderson in January?
My view is that Arsenal should avoid spending heavily on another right-back simply because White’s future remains uncertain. Timber’s return reduces the immediate urgency, while the club must consider its wider spending priorities.
If White leaves and Monaco demand a reasonable fee, Vanderson deserves serious consideration. Nevertheless, Wesley would be slightly ahead of him in my assessment because his age offers greater scope for development and future resale value.
Arsenal transfer news should focus on the bigger question: whether Arteta needs another specialist right-back immediately or can wait until summer. I would favour patience unless White’s departure creates a genuine shortage.
