Aston Villa transfer news: Aston Villa’s summer pursuit of Joao Palhinha is over. Instead, Unai Emery’s side have turned to Leon Goretzka, with the former Bayern Munich midfielder joining as a free agent, according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.

Joao Palhinha to Aston Villa pursuit ends as Villa sign Leon Goretzka

Villa had made Palhinha a priority after injuries to João Gomes and Amadou Onana left Emery short of protection in front of his defence. Yet negotiations with Bayern Munich stalled over the terms of the deal. Villa wanted a loan with an option to buy. Bayern wanted a permanent transfer. Neither blinked. Palhinha then headed for Benfica, while Villa moved quickly for Goretzka.

Aston Villa transfer news: Why Palhinha appealed to Emery

At 31, Palhinha still produced the sort of numbers that make defensive midfielders valuable. His 2025/26 loan spell at Tottenham brought 43 appearances, seven goals and two assists. More telling were the 110 completed tackles and a 61.7 per cent duel success rate. He was still getting stuck in, winning second balls and making opponents work for every yard.

With Emery’s defensive line often pushed high, having a midfielder capable of snuffing out counter-attacks before they developed could have been handy. Palhinha’s aerial strength would have helped at set-pieces too, an area Villa take seriously.

The problem with the fit

There was a problem. Emery doesn’t simply want a midfielder who destroys attacks. His deeper players have to receive under pressure, move the ball through the lines and help Villa control matches from the base of midfield.

Palhinha’s 85 per cent passing accuracy at Spurs looks respectable. His progressive distribution and ability to play through pressure aren’t at the level expected from Villa’s primary pivot. He breaks things up brilliantly. Building them is another matter.

Villa believed he could solve the immediate problem without forcing Emery into a tactical rethink in midfield. Goretzka presents a different gamble. He has his own mileage and questions after leaving Bayern, but Villa have avoided a transfer fee and secured a player with experience at the very highest level.

For a club trying to balance an urgent midfield problem with financial discipline, that distinction matters. Palhinha might have stopped the leak. Villa simply decided not to buy the bucket.
