Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League with 48 points from 32 matches, and their recent form is a major cause for concern. Liam Rosenior’s side have won just one of their last five matches across all competitions, scoring seven goals and letting in ten during that stretch. The problems aren’t just about the stats, either. Three days ago, Manchester City came to Stamford Bridge and left with a clinical 3-0 victory, further damaging Chelsea’s shrinking hopes of grabbing a Champions League spot.
Moisés Caicedo’s bad mistake gifted Jérémy Doku the third goal, a moment that perfectly captured the mood of the afternoon. Chelsea’s defensive gaps have been exposed time and again this season, and the recruitment team is well aware. It isn’t much of a shock, then, that behind the scenes, they are already looking toward the summer, and a teenage centre-back from the Netherlands has caught their eye.
Chelsea enter the race for Twente’s prize asset
Dutch outlet Voetbal International, via journalists Geert-Jan Jakobs and Martijn Krabbendam, reports that Chelsea are among the clubs keeping tabs on FC Twente’s Ruud Nijstad ahead of the summer window. The 18-year-old centre-back came through Twente’s youth ranks and broke into the first team this season, recording one goal and one assist across 1,341 minutes of Eredivisie football, with an average FotMob rating of 6.94.
Chelsea and Barcelona have surfaced as serious contenders for the youngster, with Dutch publication Voetbal International and Spanish outlet Sport both reporting that the battle for his signature is picking up speed. Jakobs confirmed that no club has officially reached out to Twente yet, though he mentioned Chelsea’s interest through indirect channels, with Barcelona also tracking the player for a while.
Twente, who have Nijstad under contract until June 2027, want a fee of around €8 million, a price tag that has already made Barcelona hesitate. Chelsea, meanwhile, have reportedly offered Nijstad a deal to sign him now and loan him back to Twente for the 2026-27 season. Nijstad himself has acknowledged the rumours and said a move this summer is still on the table.

Do Chelsea’s current state make this a transfer worth pursuing?
Chelsea’s defensive record this season makes it obvious why they are scouting centre-backs in the Eredivisie. But spending money on an 18-year-old, no matter how talented, when the first team need help right now, feels like a mix-up in priorities. Rosenior’s side conceded three goals at home to Manchester City and Everton in recent weeks, and no amount of long-term thinking can solve that issue today.
Nijstad definitely suits what Chelsea are looking for, which is a left-footed defender who is comfortable on the ball and calm under pressure, but the loan-back plan they are considering is a bit of a gamble. Chelsea’s own recent loan deals haven’t always panned out, with Kendry Páez, for example, struggling to find his feet at Strasbourg.

Jakobs gave a grounded take on the matter, suggesting that Nijstad should stay at Twente to get regular minutes rather than risking getting lost in the shuffle at a massive club. Chelsea need a centre-back who can step in and play 30-plus games immediately. While Nijstad is a smart bet for the future, the club have to be realistic, they can’t afford to focus on tomorrow while the current squad is leaking goals.
