The Premier League heavyweights are hitting a bit of a rough patch as the domestic season enters its final, frantic month of April 2026. Arne Slot recently had a frustrating night at Anfield, where Liverpool saw plenty of the ball but ultimately crashed out of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Manchester United sit in third place under Michael Carrick, who stepped in earlier this year after Ruben Amorim left. Down in West London, Liam Rosenior is feeling the heat at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea struggle to find their rhythm following a heavy defeat to Manchester City. All three clubs need to beef up their defence right away to catch the league leaders before the summer transfer window opens.
Premier League giants eye Sporting star Goncalo Inacio
European transfer expert Edu Burgos recently reported that Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United have set their sights on Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio. The 24-year-old Portuguese international is one of the hottest names in Lisbon because of how well he plays out from the back and his solid defensive instincts.
£120m Star Attacker could be the ‘ideal’ Salah replacement – But Liverpool can’t sign him
Reports suggest his current contract includes a release clause of €60 million, though Sporting might be open to negotiating if a team comes forward with a solid offer. During the 2025/2026 Liga Portugal season, Inacio has been rock solid, keeping 13 clean sheets in 25 games.
The numbers back him up, too: he averages 1.80 tackles and roughly 3.13 clearances for every 90 minutes on the pitch. His side only lets in a goal every 216 minutes when he’s leading the defence, a stat that’s definitely caught the eye of scouts in England.
Would Inacio solve the defensive woes of the English elite?
Chelsea need to make this signing a priority, especially since Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are expected to leave, which would leave a huge hole in the middle of their defence. The Blues have been leaking 1.7 goals per match lately, and Inacio has the recovery pace they’ve been missing.
€120m deal ‘on the cards’ – Arteta ready to sell two stars to sign this lethal forward
Manchester United need him to help them play out from the back, especially since Michael Carrick wants defenders who can punch passes through the lines. Liverpool are looking for a left-footed specialist to take over from Virgil van Dijk down the road, and Inacio fits exactly what Slot wants in a center-back. He brings youth and European experience that could settle any of these three defences right away.
