Chelsea transfer news: Chelsea have reportedly added Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël to their midfield shortlist after his excellent opening to the 2026/27 campaign. TEAMtalk reports that Chelsea’s recruitment department has been tracking the 22-year-old, while Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest have shown interest too. Liverpool scouts have reportedly watched him as they assess midfield options for 2027.
Zechiël has produced five goals and four assists across Feyenoord’s opening seven Eredivisie matches. He has started all eight of his club appearances this season, with five goals and four assists across all competitions.
Zechiël’s rise has gathered pace since his loan spell at Utrecht last season, where TEAMtalk reports that he recorded 10 goals and 10 assists. Feyenoord then gave him a bigger role after his return to Rotterdam, and the midfielder has responded with impressive attacking numbers.
There has been recognition beyond club football, too. Zechiël received his first Netherlands call-up this month after scoring five times in his first six league matches. Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst welcomed the selection as another step in the midfielder’s development. Feyenoord have made quick decisions to protect their asset. The club extended Zechiël’s contract on September 17, keeping him at De Kuip until 2029.
Chelsea’s interest comes after Enzo Fernández completed a £125m move to Manchester City on deadline day. The Blues failed to replace him before the window closed after Monaco pulled out of the proposed Lamine Camara deal.
Chelsea transfer news: Could Zechiël give Chelsea the midfield profile they lost?
For me, Zechiël makes sense as a recruitment target because his current numbers show something Chelsea need: midfield production from another source. He has nine league goal contributions already, and his movement into the penalty area has become a major part of his game. Eredivisie data describes him as increasingly influential from box to box, with his shooting and chance creation standing out among midfielders.
That doesn’t mean Chelsea could simply replace Fernández with Zechiël and expect the same football. Fernández offered elite distribution, switches of play and control from deeper positions, whereas Zechiël currently looks more dangerous when he carries the ball forward and attacks space.
That is important under Xabi Alonso. Chelsea appointed Alonso in July, and his side has used structures that ask midfielders to contribute both in possession and during transitions.
Zechiël could therefore offer a different solution alongside Moisés Caicedo. His passing has remained clean, while his willingness to tackle and arrive in scoring areas gives him a broader attacking profile than a conventional holding midfielder.
There are flaws, though. His 5-1 defeat against Barcelona exposed the difference between dominating Eredivisie matches and controlling elite Champions League transitions. Feyenoord themselves admitted Barcelona punished mistakes ruthlessly that night.
Chelsea should therefore view him as a developing midfielder rather than a ready-made Fernández replacement. At 22, with a contract through 2029 and several Premier League clubs watching, Feyenoord have little reason to make negotiations easy. For Chelsea, the appeal lies in the upside, especially if Zechiël keeps producing at this rate while adding greater control without the ball. That is precisely why the current Chelsea transfer news deserves attention.
