The underlying issue concerns his role. Wirtz performs best when he receives the ball centrally, where his awareness and close control allow him to connect midfield with the attack. Liverpool’s previous tactical approach sometimes placed him wider on the left, reducing his influence in central areas.
Andoni Iraola has shown greater willingness to use Wirtz as an advanced No. 10. His public defence of the midfielder’s contribution reflects a belief that statistics alone cannot capture his value. Wirtz’s work without the ball and his involvement in Liverpool’s pressing structure matter, particularly during difficult matches.
A move to Bayern could create fresh problems. Jamal Musiala already occupies a prominent creative role, while Michael Olise provides another threat between the lines. Wirtz would face competition for central attacking minutes rather than guaranteed responsibility.
Liverpool’s project gives him time to build combinations with Bradley Barcola and Cody Gakpo. Iraola’s system demands intense pressing, quick movement and better attacking connections. Wirtz needs consistent minutes in that structure before anyone judges the transfer fairly.
