Manchester City eye Vinicius Junior as Real Madrid’s contract stand-off reaches a critical point

Manchester City have emerged as a serious landing spot for Vinicius Junior ahead of the 2026/27 season. Reports from TEAMtalk suggest the club are keeping a close eye on the Brazilian’s increasingly uncertain situation at Real Madrid. With the 25-year-old’s contract set to expire in June 2027, Real Madrid are facing the very real possibility of losing one of their best players.

Talks hit a roadblock last year, and though both sides agreed to try again this summer, several major hurdles remain, specifically the money involved and whether the club’s future plans still align with the player’s own goals. Vinicius’s camp is pushing for a salary that matches Kylian Mbappé’s, essentially asking for him to be the highest-paid player in Madrid.

So far, the club have pushed back, worried about how that might mess up their current wage structure. While Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and PSG are all watching from the sidelines, City seem to be leading the charge in the Premier League, especially since PSG’s interest have reportedly cooled. The numbers back up the hype: 15 La Liga goals and five assists this season. However, he still has one glaring weakness, as his form in big away games is still a question mark, as only six of his 15 league goals have come on the road.

Does signing Vinicius Junior actually solve Manchester City’s deepest problem?

To be honest, Manchester City’s interest makes sense on paper, but whether he actually fits is worth debating. With Doku, Semenyo, and Rayan Cherki already in the mix, City aren’t exactly desperate for attackers. Vinicius wouldn’t just join the rotation; he would expect to be the main man. Pep Guardiola’s system usually puts the team’s structure above individual flair, whereas Vinicius is at his best when he has the freedom to take players on and improvise.

That could create some real friction. City are reportedly considering offers between €100–150 million, a massive investment for a club still trying to figure out their identity as the post-Guardiola era approaches. Manchester City need to know exactly what their system will look like before they bring in a player who changes the entire dynamic of the team, and right now, they don’t seem to have that clarity.
