Manchester United sit third in the Premier League table with 55 points from 32 matches, and the season has taken on a new look under head coach Michael Carrick. Carrick stepped in this January after Ruben Amorim was sacked following a disappointing 14-month tenure. While Carrick has managed to change the situation to some degree, the team’s form is still hit-or-miss.
United’s last five league games tell the story. They went through a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, a 1-2 loss at Newcastle, a 3-1 home victory against Aston Villa, a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, and a recent 1-2 shock at home to Leeds.
That Leeds result was United’s first home loss under Carrick and marked Leeds’ first win at Old Trafford since 1981. For a club still trying to figure out their identity, the old doubts about squad depth and quality haven’t gone away, and with the summer window around the corner, the pressure to sign new players is ramping up.
Camavinga not pushing for the exit, Romano insists
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reported on 18 March that United have put Eduardo Camavinga on their radar, with intermediaries already checking in with top clubs about the 23-year-old’s availability. Camavinga, who often fills in at left-back, has struggled with injuries over the last two years, and his form throughout this 2025/26 season has been a bit flat.
Man Utd ready to make £78m transfer bid for ‘long-term’ target
Real Madrid, now under Álvaro Arbeloa after Xabi Alonso left following January’s Supercopa loss to Barcelona, originally bought Camavinga from Rennes in 2021 for about €40 million. However, on 13 April, Fabrizio Romano moved to quell the rumours on his YouTube channel. Romano pointed out that Real Madrid aren’t looking to sell, his agents aren’t shopping him around, and Camavinga is happy staying at the Bernabéu.
While Romano noted that Madrid might listen if a massive offer came in, and that English clubs have made some exploratory phone calls, he made it clear that nothing has moved past the early stages. Despite the links, PSG aren’t currently making a move either.
Do Manchester United actually have a realistic path to signing Camavinga?
The short answer is: probably not. Beyond Romano’s update, United are in a tricky spot. Carrick’s squad is still fighting for a Champions League spot, with Chelsea only seven points behind. This means United’s budget this summer depends almost entirely on whether they actually finish in the top four. Camavinga is exactly the type of player United lack, young, versatile, and comfortable on the ball, but there is a big difference between a club liking a player and that player actually being for sale.
Madrid’s coaching carousel this season (two managers in seven months) means the team are in a state of flux, and whoever takes the job permanently this summer could easily decide Camavinga is untouchable. United would have to shell out a massive fee and sell Camavinga on a long-term vision, which is something Carrick can’t really do yet, while his own future at the club is not certain.
Big Transfer Revamp – Five Players that Manchester United can sign this summer
Right now, this looks like Manchester United just doing their homework rather than a serious chase. It’s going to take a lot more than a few phone calls to make this happen.
