Manchester United push to the front in the Camavinga transfer race

Manchester United have emerged as one of the two main favourites to sign Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga this summer. Alongside Arsenal, the Red Devils are showing the most serious interest in the 23-year-old Frenchman. The timing makes perfect sense. With Casemiro set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season, and Manuel Ugarte also potentially on his way out, United have made midfield reinforcements a top priority.

Camavinga moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Stade Rennais in 2021 as a highly-rated teenager, going on to play his part in two Champions League and La Liga titles. However, his progress in Madrid has stalled lately. A lack of regular starts, coupled with the lure of a big Premier League offer, has made a summer move much more likely. Real Madrid are expected to hold out for around €60 million before letting him go.

While no official bid has been made, Premier League clubs are expected to test the waters with offers in the €55–60 million range once the window opens. Because Camavinga’s contract runs until 2029, Madrid still hold all the cards in negotiations.

Michael Carrick’s side see the France international as a direct replacement for Casemiro, and his ability to play in central midfield, holding midfield, or even at full-back makes him a very useful target. Chelsea and Tottenham are keeping tabs on the situation, while PSG are also considering bringing the player back to France.

Would Camavinga genuinely solve Manchester United’s midfield problem?

Given that Manchester United need both physicality and creativity in the centre of the pitch, does Camavinga actually address the right areas?

From a United standpoint, he does, but only to an extent. Camavinga brings the energy, press resistance, and versatility that Carrick’s system needs during transitions. He covers a lot of ground and reads the game with a maturity that belies his 23 years. That said, United still struggle with a lack of creativity from deep.

While Camavinga can win the ball back, he isn’t necessarily the man to manufacture chances or dictate the tempo of an entire attack. He would shore up the midfield structure rather than reinvent it. Manchester United should probably view him as one half of a midfield rebuild, pairing his defensive work with a more creative playmaker. At £52 million, he is a great deal for a player of his age and European experience, but United can’t afford to treat a single signing as a total fix.
