Manchester United transfer exit: The rebuild starts with who leaves

Manchester United transfer exit: Old Trafford’s summer clear-out is overdue, and three names sit at the very top of Carrick’s out-tray.

The Manchester United transfer exit conversation has shifted from rumour to reality this summer. Michael Carrick doesn’t just want to bring players in. He needs to ship the right ones out first, and the clock is ticking fast. Three players in particular carry the dead weight of failed experiments, busted wages, and fading market value. Sell them now. Watch the rebuild stall before it even starts otherwise.

Manchester United transfer exit no. 1 — Marcus Rashford, valued at £40m

Rashford’s story at Old Trafford is effectively over. The club set a £40 million asking price, according to ESPN, though Barcelona’s reluctance to trigger their €30 million purchase option has dragged the saga into embarrassing territory. The Catalan club spent heavily on Anthony Gordon instead. They left United holding a player they simply have no use for.

Bayern Munich entered the frame and, per Football365, showed willingness to match United’s valuation. Yet they hesitated over Rashford’s wage demands, given he wouldn’t walk straight into the starting eleven at the Allianz Arena.

At 28 years old and contracted until 2028, Rashford contributed 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances while out on loan at Barcelona last term. The numbers aren’t bad. The problem is that United see no future for him in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 system. Keeping him means carrying roughly £325,000 a week in wages for a player not in the squad picture. The Manchester United transfer exit here is non-negotiable. Even a sale at £13 million, as some reports suggested at the lower end, strips that wage burden and frees up serious funds quickly.

Manchester United transfer exit no. 2 — Manuel Ugarte, priced at £25m

Ugarte cost United £42.4 million plus add-ons from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. Carrick opened the door to his departure almost immediately after taking permanent charge, and the club now price him at around £25 million. It is a significant loss on paper, but one they’re ready to swallow.

The Uruguayan never convincingly won over the Old Trafford faithful. With Carrick actively pursuing Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid and other midfield options, including Carlos Baleba of Brighton, Ugarte finds himself redundant in the engine room. Two new midfielders represent the priority. Keeping Ugarte complicates that arithmetic badly.

Manchester United transfer exit no. 3 — Joshua Zirkzee, asking price £21.9m

Signed from Bologna for £36 million in 2024, Zirkzee managed just one goal this season and barely featured once December arrived. Roma courted him heavily in January, though a standoff over the fee structure collapsed those talks. United held firm then, demanding a permanent deal somewhere between €35–40 million.

Reality has bitten harder by summer 2026. The expected sale price dropped to around £21.9 million. A brutal write-down. United need the space in the squad and on the wage bill far more than they need the dignity of a full recoup. The Manchester United transfer exit for Zirkzee remains urgent. The longer he sits unused, the lower that number drops.

Three players. Three failed investments. Carrick needs the cash, the space, and the clarity of vision that only a decisive clearout can deliver.
