Manchester United transfer news: United’s £103m Vinicius Jr gamble

Manchester United transfer news: The story refuses to go away. It has taken a dramatic, slightly unhinged turn. Reports from Spanish outlet El Nacional suggest that Michael Carrick’s Manchester United are ready to test Real Madrid‘s patience. The target? Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian winger just lit up La Liga and the 2026 World Cup. Now, United are reportedly considering a €120 million (£103m) opening bid.

It is a gamble. A massive one. The figure is designed to force Florentino Pérez into a conversation rather than an immediate rejection.

Vinícius turns 26 in July. His contract at the Bernabéu runs until June 2027. That puts Real Madrid in a terrible position because the player enters the post-World Cup period as a dangerous free-agent-in-waiting. Talks happened earlier this year. Everyone said an extension was close. Yet, the contract remains unsigned. ESPN Brasil claims the sticking point is cold, hard cash. Madrid hate breaking their wage structure, and Vinícius wants roughly €20 million net per year plus a €10 million signing bonus. Pérez pulled the bonus from the latest offer. Talks stalled right there.

The cold, hard numbers behind the Brazilian’s price tag

Look at his 2025-26 season. He managed 16 goals and five assists across 36 La Liga appearances. He finished second in the club’s scoring charts behind Kylian Mbappé. FootyStats data shows 21 direct goal involvements in the league alone. Across all competitions, sources cited by Sports Illustrated put his total at 22 goals and 10 assists. That averages out at 0.51 goals per 90 minutes. His non-penalty expected goals figure of 0.46 per 90 placed him in the top 95th percentile of La Liga forwards.

Then the World Cup happened. Brazil’s No. 7 shifted gears. Four goals and one assist in just three games while playing centrally for the Selecção. He looked completely unplayable. Even Brazilian legend Zico noticed, stating publicly that Vinícius is a model professional and a hard worker. Carrick is obsessed. He views the winger as his absolute priority.

Madrid are putting on a brave face. Florentino Pérez told El País that Vinícius can leave as a free agent in 2027 if he wants to, but insists Los Blancos will not sell this summer. Don’t believe everything you hear. TEAMtalk insider Graeme Bailey reported in April that intermediaries had already sounded out United. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea were also contacted.

Prices are fluctuating wildly. 90min floated a €180 million (£155m) price tag, while older reports quoted a €150 million minimum. United’s €120 million opening gambit ignores that mythical €1 billion release clause. It is a probe. A lowball offer to see if Madrid blink.

AS reports that Madrid plan one final push to agree terms now that the World Cup is over. They have an internal deadline set for January 2027, right before he can legally negotiate with foreign clubs. PSG are watching closely too. Nasser Al-Khelaïfi wants revenge for the Mbappé defection and has the money to let Vinícius run his contract down. That scenario terrifies the Bernabéu board far more than a bid from Old Trafford.
