Nepal enter the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a rare advantage for an associate nation. While India are the official hosts, Nepal will play all their Group C matches at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, a venue whose conditions closely mirror what the team has trained for over the past year.
Confidence within the squad has grown steadily. A historic T20I series win over the West Indies in late 2025, a competitive Nepal Premier League season, and a stable coaching setup under Stuart Law have changed how Nepal are viewed internationally. However, concerns remain over their lack of confirmed warm-up matches compared to other teams in the group.
Drawn alongside England, West Indies, Bangladesh and Italy, Nepal face a tough group. Still, familiar conditions, strong spin options and vocal fan support could help the Rhinos push for a Super Eight spot.
Nepal’s Road to T20 World Cup 2026: Preparation, Qualification and Squad Readiness
Nepal qualified for the tournament through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia and East Asia-Pacific Qualifier held in Oman in October 2025. Finishing inside the top three of the Super Six stage, Nepal once again showed their ability to handle pressure, earning narrow wins against UAE and Qatar.
This qualification marked Nepal’s first back-to-back appearances at the T20 World Cup, following their participation in the 2024 edition. It reflects the steady progress made by the national setup over the past decade.
Preparation for the World Cup has revolved heavily around the Nepal Premier League. The second season concluded in December 2025, with Lumbini Lions, led by Rohit Kumar Paudel, lifting the trophy. Several national players gained valuable experience by competing alongside international stars, something that has previously been missing in Nepal’s domestic structure.
Stuart Law announced a 15-member squad in early January, including NPL breakout player Sher Malla. Training camps were initially held in Kathmandu before shifting to Butwal’s Extratech Oval Cricket Stadium due to venue unavailability in the capital.
One concern is the absence of confirmed warm-up matches. While other Group C teams are playing bilateral series, Nepal are still awaiting clarity from the ICC regarding official warm-up fixtures. Their opening match against England on February 8 will therefore be a significant early test.
Group C Fixtures, Mumbai Advantage and Nepal’s Best Chances to Progress
Nepal’s entire group stage will be played at the Wankhede Stadium, eliminating travel fatigue and allowing the team to fully understand pitch behaviour, boundary sizes and dew conditions.
Their fixtures include matches against England on February 8, Italy on February 12, West Indies on February 15 and Bangladesh on February 17, all in Mumbai.
The match against Italy is a must-win, and Nepal will aim to secure a strong Net Run Rate from that fixture. The final group game against Bangladesh could be decisive. Nepal have pushed Bangladesh close in previous meetings, and on a flat Mumbai surface, their spinners could play a key role.
Batting conditions at Wankhede suit Nepal’s aggressive approach. Kushal Bhurtel is dangerous during the powerplay, while Dipendra Singh Airee has repeatedly proven his ability to finish games under pressure. Small boundaries and potential dew during night matches further strengthen Nepal’s chasing prospects.
Another factor working in Nepal’s favour is fan support. Thousands of Nepali supporters are expected to travel to Mumbai, creating an atmosphere closer to a home game than a neutral fixture.
If Nepal manage two wins with a strong Net Run Rate, or pull off three victories, qualification for the Super Eight is achievable. Such a result would mark the biggest achievement in Nepal’s T20 World Cup history.
From wins over Hong Kong and Afghanistan in 2014 to a one-run defeat against South Africa in 2024, Nepal’s World Cup journey has steadily gained attention. The 2026 edition presents their most balanced and confident squad yet.
