Speaking to Spanish outlet AS while on international duty with Ecuador in Madrid, 24-year-old defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo didn’t exactly shut the door on a potential move to Real Madrid. His comments bring a fresh wave of anxiety to a Chelsea dressing room that already looks in total disarray. “You never know in football, don’t you think?” he told AS when asked if he could see himself in all white. While he acknowledged his current Chelsea contract, he left things pointedly open, adding: “We’ll see what the future holds. Let’s see what surprises await us.” He did try to balance things out by saying Chelsea had helped him a lot since his arrival and that he wants to pay them back on the pitch for as long as he’s there.

The timing, however, is the real issue. Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior had already dropped captain Enzo Fernandez for two matches after the Argentine admitted he liked Madrid and wanted to live in Spain. Rosenior was clear that “a line was crossed,” though Fernandez’s agent called the punishment “completely unfair.”

With Marc Cucurella also speaking out during the break, Caicedo is now the third senior player in just a few days to stir the pot at the worst possible time. Chelsea have lost four straight games, crashed out of the Champions League to PSG, and slipped to sixth in the league. Caicedo arrived in August 2023 for a record £115 million from Brighton, with a deal that runs until June 2031.

Season by season, Caicedo has been consistent. So why does this still feel precarious for Chelsea?

FootyStats shows that Caicedo has played 24 Premier League matches in 2025/26, scoring 3 goals and recording 1 assist across 2,045 minutes. He has also picked up 9 yellow cards and a red card. Those bookings highlight a clear problem, which is a reckless streak in his tackling that often hurts the team in big moments. But his real value is that engine-room presence. He is constantly pressing, winning the ball back, and keeping things moving for a side that has no other defensive midfielder of his level. Chelsea desperately needs him next season; without him, the midfield loses its spine, and there isn’t a replacement of the same quality in the squad.

Things could get messy this summer. Real Madrid have a habit of going after elite defensive midfielders who have that composure and physicality, and Caicedo carries those attributes perfectly. If Madrid actually makes a move and Caicedo shows interest, Chelsea’s only real advantage is that long contract. Honestly, I think Chelsea will keep him this summer, but the fact that two star midfielders have flirted with Madrid in the same week says a lot about the lack of confidence in the club’s current path.
