Ederson to Manchester United: Red Devils Land Atalanta’s Midfield Anchor for £38m
Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with Sky Sports reporting that the Red Devils will pay an initial fee of £34m plus £3.8m in potential add-ons for the Brazilian international. The total deal, therefore, reaches £38m, and it represents a move that United have pursued through multiple transfer windows. The deal is expected to go through before July, subject to Ederson completing his medical at Carrington, which would make the 26-year-old the first signing of the Michael Carrick era.
Ederson had already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils, pausing negotiations with other interested clubs to prioritise a move to Old Trafford, and he is set to sign a four-year contract with the option of a fifth year. Sources at ESPN additionally confirmed that Manchester United are ready to pay around £35 million for the Brazil international, who is set to become the first new arrival at Old Trafford this summer, with the club making midfield the priority position to strengthen ahead of next season.
Ederson had looked destined for Atletico Madrid before the Spanish club switched their attention towards Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, which allowed United to move decisively and agree terms. The path cleared at exactly the right moment, and United seized it without hesitation.
Ederson to Manchester United: What Does He Bring to Old Trafford?
In Serie A this season, Ederson made 30 appearances for Atalanta, playing 2,236 minutes, starting 26 of those games, contributing two goals and one assist while picking up three yellow cards. He is a versatile central midfielder capable of operating in attacking and defensive roles, known for his ball-winning proficiency and his ability to track back quickly. Over his four seasons at Atalanta, he has played 153 Serie A matches in total, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists across his career in Italy’s top flight.

Ederson to Manchester United: Will He Fix Carrick’s Biggest Problem?
Here is where the signing matters most, and the reasoning behind it tells a story of a club that had been falling apart structurally for years. With Casemiro departing on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte available for the right offer, midfield reinforcement was identified as a priority ahead of next season. United’s midfield had lacked energy, aggression, and consistent forward momentum for the better part of two seasons.
Carrick inherits a squad that has qualified for the Champions League but lost their direction in league football, finishing far short of its ambitions domestically. Ederson brings exactly what that midfield lacks because he presses hard, covers ground relentlessly, and contributes at both ends of the pitch with meaningful regularity. His presence could also boost United’s creativity and reduce the burden on Bruno Fernandes, who has too often been left to carry the attacking responsibility alone.

Moreover, Ederson is likely to be one of at least two midfielders joining Old Trafford this summer, with Manchester United also showing interest in Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson. For Carrick, signing Ederson to Manchester United so early in the window is a clear statement of intent, and if the supporting signings follow, this midfield rebuild could genuinely change United’s fortunes next season.
