Lucien Agoume to Manchester United: Sevilla’s Bargain Offer Explained
Sevilla sporting director Jose Ignacio Navarro has made direct contact with Manchester United, formally presenting the club with the opportunity to sign Lucien Agoume as the Spanish side scramble to balance their books before the June 30th financial deadline. The offer, as reported by the Evening Standard citing Spanish outlet Vamos Mi Sevilla, comes with an asking price of €25m, approximately £21.5m, which represents a tempting proposition on paper. Sevilla have also told United that rival clubs have registered interest in the 24-year-old Frenchman, signalling the Andalusian side’s intent to make a quick move on any potential deal.
Lucien Agoume to Manchester United: The Transfer Backdrop
United are desperate to find a Casemiro replacement before pre-season begins, while also looking to bring in at least two more midfielders to add genuine depth to a department that has been neglected for far too long. Manuel Ugarte was signed to fill that holding role, but the Uruguayan has flattered to deceive during his two-year spell at Old Trafford, and INEOS have seen enough. Meanwhile, targets such as Aurelien Tchouameni have been ruled out after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez publicly shut the door on any exit, and Sandro Tonali’s wage demands have placed him firmly out of reach. Against that backdrop, Agoume’s relatively modest price tag carries obvious appeal for a club that must spend smartly.
Agoume joined Sevilla permanently from Inter Milan last summer and has nailed down a regular starting spot in La Liga, growing steadily into one of European football’s more intriguing midfield prospects. His profile as a technically capable, ball-winning midfielder fits the mould of what Carrick reportedly wants alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the centre of the park.

Does Carrick Need Lucien Agoume to Manchester United Despite Ederson?
Manchester United have already agreed a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson in a package rising to €45m, with personal terms agreed on a four-plus-one-year contract. That signing covers the deep-lying engine role convincingly. So the real question is whether Agoume brings something meaningfully different, not just another body in a crowded space.
The case for him is actually stronger than it first appears. United are expected to sign at least two midfielders this summer, with Ugarte available for the right offer and the club actively seeking further depth. Agoume at £21.5m would not squeeze the budget in the same way a £50m signing would, and at 24 he carries appreciable resale value. Carrick, much like he did as a player, clearly values intelligence and positioning in midfield, and Agoume reads the game with a maturity beyond his age.

That said, Manchester United cannot sign players purely because the price is low. Sevilla are selling out of necessity, and that alone should not be the deciding factor. If Carrick genuinely sees Agoume as the third midfielder in his preferred XI rather than a squad filler, then £21.5m for a player with years ahead of him makes rational sense. If the interest is merely opportunistic, United should pass and put that budget toward more pressing needs in defence or attack.
