Three Realistic Harry Maguire Replacements For Carrick’s Man Utd

Manchester United made headlines in early April when Harry Maguire signed a contract extension keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2027. Fabrizio Romano quickly dismissed reports from Italy linking the England centre-back to Inter Milan, insisting Maguire was staying put. Yet the situation at the back of Carrick’s side is far from settled. Matthijs de Ligt is recovering from back surgery and has not featured since November, while Lisandro Martinez carries a persistent injury record that has limited his availability consistently. As Manchester United prepare for a return to the Champions League, the need for dependable, ball-playing Harry Maguire replacements has grown louder by the week.

The irony is not lost that Thomas Tuchel omitted Maguire from England’s World Cup squad just weeks after the defender declared himself “shocked and gutted.” At 33, with one year left on his deal and question marks growing louder over his long-term future, United must plan with clarity rather than sentiment.

Harry Maguire Replacements Option 1: Castello Lukeba (RB Leipzig)

Castello Lukeba stands at the top of United’s defensive shopping list and for very clear reasons. The 23-year-old Frenchman, described by scouts as the “new Joško Gvardiol,” has been excellent in the Bundesliga this season and RB Leipzig have confirmed they are prepared to allow him to leave. His release clause sits at €80 million, though reports suggest a deal below that figure remains possible. United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid all monitor his situation closely, but Carrick’s side are widely reported to lead the race. Left-footed, physically dominant, and comfortable in possession, Lukeba offers exactly the profile United require alongside the developing Leny Yoro.

Harry Maguire Replacements Option 2: Gleison Bremer (Juventus)

Gleison Bremer brings a different proposition entirely. The 29-year-old Brazilian carries a €58 million release clause in his Juventus contract, and crucially, that clause expires on 10th August, placing significant urgency on any interested party. Tuttosport broke the story of United’s formal interest, and Gazzetta dello Sport subsequently confirmed that Bremer “will listen to offers” after the World Cup, particularly if Juventus miss the Champions League. United have already held preliminary meetings with his representatives. His commanding aerial presence and leadership experience in Serie A make him the closest like-for-like replacement for Maguire from a physical standpoint, even if he costs less and brings more pedigree.

Option 3: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton)

Jarrad Branthwaite remains the dream domestic option for Carrick. Manchester United have chased the Everton defender since 2024, tabling bids of £43 million and then £50 million before Everton held firm. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, a meeting was held with Branthwaite’s camp as recently as February 2026, during which his interest in moving to Old Trafford was reaffirmed. Branthwaite signed a new Everton deal extending to 2030 that reportedly includes an exit clause activating this summer. His left-footedness, Premier League readiness, and age profile make him arguably the safest long-term investment in this list. United value building a British core, and Branthwaite slots directly into that vision.

Given the budget Manchester United have available and the defensive gaps that persist beyond Maguire, all three names represent genuine, trackable targets rather than speculative links. Carrick’s summer rebuild could define the next era at Old Trafford, and addressing Harry Maguire replacements now, rather than reactively in 2027, is the right call.
